Last night I watched the two hour program on A&E. It is a documentary that displays the thinking behind the evangelical movement. While it is informative, I thought it was rather one sided. It demonstrates that the radical right is militant in their approach to changing this country into a theocracy, but insinuates that the radical left is not in fact trying to completely remove religion. Some parts were rather amusing, the lecture on Harry Potter for example, while others were downright disgusting, as they forced children into tears. But no matter what anyone says of the documentary, Ted Haggard condemning homosexuality was priceless.

it's best not to listen to any side that is "radical" either left or right becuase both sides are likely to be bias and one sided. that's why they're called radical.

Seen it.. over and over... and over.. infact there are maybe.. 3-5 posts made on it here. *shudders*

Yes, but I think it is extremely important to understand the way radicals think, as it is often the radicals who shape the world. When a powerful movement becomes misguided, it also becomes dangerous.

I, unfortunately, have not seen it, but a friend who did see it told me about a scene where an effigy of George W. Bush was infront of these kids and they were all crying and reaching for it, almost as if they were worshiping it. That disturbed me.

They brought in a cardboard poster of him, and then they put their hands on the poster and prayed for him.

yeah i agree. we should be listening to what radicals are saying and doing for sure. i just ment to make sure one doesn't form their opinions and believes based on what one side or the other of radicals say and show them because they are so bias towards anything that has to do with the opposite side. but defenently know what they are doing in the world.

Yes, and it's like Haggard said, they represent a huge voting block. Very scary what people have planned for this country.

Very scary indeed.

Fortunately, there are only a few of those camps and they are being run out of almost every county they have tried to establish themselves...yet the news won't let it die in much the same way they portray Muslims as a whole.

I did to. For a few years. Enough, in fact, that they offered me a job as a counselor not too long ago. I declined telling them I wasn't very religious anymore (my nice way of laying it down for them), yet they still insisted because they needed someone to play bass guitar for their creepy chapel sessions where they sing those annoying songs. "The Gooooood of peace will soon crush Satan, yes the Gooooood peace will crush him underneath his feet". I eventually told them where to stick it, that I am an atheist and I have morals, and brainwashing children is not one of them. yes.gif

*shutters* I can only imagine what would have happened if I actually took the job.

EDIT: I actually found it online and I started watching it. The part with the kids praying in tongues will probably give me nightmares. blink.gif

Heres a link if anyone's interested.

Seriously? In the film world, Jesus Camp is considered to be one of the most even documentaries in a long time. They made a really smart decision in using a Christian radio host as juxtaposition. Most documentaries on these subjects use scientists, which generally makes it really one sided because science can be proven, religion can't, it isn't a fair fight. They showed that NOT all Christians are as extreme as the people running that camp.

There are reasons that it was nominated for an Academy Award. It lost to An Inconvienient Truth (which was for political reasons. Not artistic merit. Don't get me wrong, I liked it, but it wasn't the best documentary of last year), but still, I think they did a great job for two nice Jewish girls, and the people in the documentary were very happy with how they were portrayed.

Imagine if Michael Moore had made this documentary, there would have been CGI devil horns and the kids would be carrying guns, and I would have 100% agreed that it was one sided, but these are the girls who made The Boys of Baraka.
