Jago Deighton, 8, was in the car with his dad Neil Stewart, 35, when his blood sugar levels plummeted. Neil immediately pulled over on the hard shoulder of the M5 but fell unconscious in front of his son.
Jago used his father's mobile to call his mother Mel, 31, who dialled 999 but was only able to tell officers they were "somewhere between Devon and Birmingham".
She gave police her husband's mobile phone number and when an operator called, Jago answered the phone but had no idea where the car was parked. The quick-thinking youngster then grabbed the car's SatNav kit and by reading the screen revealed they were still on the M5.
Jago then got out of the car and spotted a road sign and within three minutes police had found them.
Neil, was taken to hospital and released the following day. His wife Mel, said her son has saved his father's life.
