Janet Frame, whose vividly romantic explorations of madness and language in novels, poetry and autobiography propelled her to worldwide attention, died yesterday in Dunedin, New Zealand. She was 79.

Ahh yes Labotomies where quite common practice untill recently . I believe Rosemary Kennedy , the Aunt of J.F.K. was institutionalised after a failed labotomy . Although I'm not quite sure how one could be viewed as succesfull.
