"Alone in his tiny plastic sea kayak, marine biologist Trey Snow had hoped to stealthily track a great white shark. But he had the shock of his life when he spotted a giant fin and realised it was he who was being stalked - by surely one of the most feared killers in the world.

The magnificent creature initially dived to the seabed, inspecting the kayak from below, before rising menacingly to the surface. Luckily for Trey, the 13ft-long shark was more inquisitive than hungry. "

True, according to Snopes.

Interesting. i would have guessed "fake" based on how warm it looks, and i thought great whites were cold water sharks.

I'm no marine biologist, though. it' is an amazing picture.

Oh, wait, it's Capetown...the water there is cold, I understand.

Thats a great Pic.!

great white sharks may spend most of their time in cold water but they are studied off the coast of mexico on the pacific side, and in the gulf of mexico the "red tide" is supposed to be caused by great whites, Hawaii isn't cold and they go there too.

IMO sharks are some of the most amazing, magnificent beautiful creatures on this planet. i love love them wub.gif

It is true that sharks do live in cold water, like great whites which are my favorite! wub.gif but few sharks live in warm water like tiger shark or the white tiped cool.gif

Wow, I'd always heard that photo is a fake... I love it! The one with the article is even better; shows the inquisitive nature of the animals, even if its purpose is only to evaluate edibility. =P
Cryptoman
That is simply amazing! The grace of these creatures always astound me.

Just curious...
How come the canoeist is casting a reflection/shadow 'in the water & in the beautiful sunlight/shine' & the Shark is not, 'at all not even a reflection on his front and rear fins which are out of the water no less'?
hmmm(?)

Where did you here that? Red tide is caused by the dinoflagellate Karenia brevis which produces the poison brevotoxin. Feel free to check out Mote Marines information on it where I help study it.
Mote red tide information.
Whites are rare in the gulf, very rare. The Pacific coast of Mexico is also bloody cold. It has cold currents running down it as does California (Where they are more prevalently studied) South Africa and Australia also find them mainly in cold water. They are found off Hawaii, but again this is rare. They are very much a predominately temperate water species. Hence the adaptation of endothermic poikilothermy, basically it is slightly warm blooded. This helps it hunt in cold water.

Just on the original point, I get so annoyed when articles say great whites are looking at us for potential prey, very few people die from great white attacks ever, most bites are not fatal and are nearly always misidentification and in murky water with limited visibility. You are more likely to be killed by a pet dog.

Is anyone questioning the pic itself (photoshopped)(?)
The dude that took the shot was up for some kinda award in photography?...

If you trust Snopes, they confirm the credibility of the photo. See post #2 in this thread.

Great Whites have been known to attack kayaks before. We've had a few fatal attacks in recent years here in the Central Coast of California. I read one story where a diver has his entire head in the mouth of a great white and survived. That would stay with you for awhile!

It would indeed. However kayak attack attacks are still so rare it is not worth thinking about. If you worry about that, you should really worry about driving!

I don't wanna sound cynical here, i just don't accept it. I'm no photoshop expert but as s i said in post #17 theres no consistency in the shot. (reflection/shadows etc) the shark looks right out of place in comparison to the canoeist? Shark in ''full shadow''/ Canoeist in ''full sunlight/shine'' (maybe two separate shots from different times merged into one shot?) How hard could that be with a watery ocean backdrop taken in the exact same spot?

I'd say in time this ''award winning photo'' will be proved a fake.

Its actually an NGC photo, if I'm not mistaken. I'm pretty sure NGC wouldn't put up photoshopped pictures.
