I'm planning on writing a fantasy/scifi novel trilogy soon as to, if successful, will rocket me into enough wealth to begin working on my very high and unrealistic ambitions by the time I am 18. I've begun to develop what I believe to be a fantastic storyline in my mind and I was wondering if anyone could give me some tips to developing plots and organizing my ideas; or just anything related to novel writing. Thank you.

What I do is write out a detailed outline basically as if you were watching a movie. Puts you in the scene then you just expand it from there. Make it descriptive, but don't over do it. Who, what when, and why is always crucial to the story and do not drift away from the story idea when you don't need to.

BTW, if you are expecting to gain wealth from writing alone, you are in the wrong business. Very few authors sold their first story idea and often got a lot of rejections. Even Stephen King got his fair share. However in those days you were limited to so many books a year under one name, which is why a lot of people make pen names.

Just don't expect to sell your idea, write because you want to write, otherwise it leads to disappointment.

On the subject of Stephen King....he has written a book about how to write and woven it into the story of
his life and writing career. If I remember right it's called 'On Writing'....If you track this book down....you
could find it useful.... thumbsup.gif

I TOTALLY agree with this. I'm working on my 6th novel right now (none published as of yet, though two with agents). I write fantasy & horror.

First books are hard to sell. Trilogies are even harder to sell. Cross-genre fantasy/sci-fi combos are hard to sell too - is it marketable, niche wise?

Some outline, some do not. I do not. I shoot through my 1st draft without stopping to edit. My tips? Start with characters. Character driven fiction, even is speculative genres, is more popular than plot-driven these days.

I could go on for hours here. original.gif
