Full Version: Need idea for better cpu cooler

My computer has a Socket-A motherboard with a Athlon 2700+ cpu chip.

It runs much too hot- 50c when using the Amd stock cooler recommended for it. I have a friend who has a Amd 2600 cpu chip in her computer, which runs at 35c with a Thermaltake volcano. So I had the cooler replaced with a Thermaltake Tr2-M3, which has a 80mm fan and the widest base that can be fit onto the motherboard. I couldn't find any Thermaltake volcanoes. The new cooler makes no difference, it still runs at 50c. The very bottom of the heat sink, just above where the cpu chip is, gets hot while the rest of the heat sink remains cool. As though the heat is not being distributed very well.

What better cooler can I use that will fit? There is no room in the case for a water cooling unit.

What kind of thermal grease did you use with the new cooler?

It is supposed to be Arctic Silver

I've had good luck with Arctic Silver myself. I'm only using a cheap fan and getting 35 degrees Celcius during normal runtime. It might spike to 40 when playing games. Was the previous grease removed as best as possible? How is the airflow in the rest of the case? A great fan on the processor won't do much if the air can't be moved out of the way in the case.

I know this is of no use but i read an article somewhere about a pc guru who submerged is pc in vegetable oils to keep it cool, and it worked...

This guy? Linky here

It still really didn't work for him because the hardware still gave off a bit of heat that in turn slowly heated up all that oil. You'd still need a way then to cool the oil.

Actually, the oils dont heat that well, if you have a basic size case, you wont have any problems. I built my own about 3 months ago

Its 9 inches wide by 2.5 ft. tall and 2.5ft. Long. the oil cools very rapidly.

My 'alien' tower as a extra two inches of 'around' space, with a constantly cooling triple fan pack, solely for the purpose of cooling just the air within the case, it as a single larger fan to exhaust the warm air, and it is replaced with fresh cooled air from the on board freezer unit installed to the rear of the tower, it as a secondery back up cooling unit made from stainless steel tubes that carry anti freeze as a coolant around the clever parts. wink2.gif rolleyes.gif
