Ever since watching Jurassic Park as a child, I have wondered if cloning a dinosaur could be possible now or in the near future. I really don't want to see the day a real live Jurassic park opens. Think of the implications. Would we, should we? What does everybody think?
I found this article on CNN:
CNN) -- In an eerie recreation of Steven Spielberg's blockbuster movie "Jurassic Park", scientists are planning to clone an extinct animal to be the central attraction of a wildlife park.

I see no reason why it wouldn't be possible, if they could find a complete strand of DNA. However, chances are they couldn't, and would have to fill in the missing bits with nucleotides from modern birds and crocodiles. The resulting beast would be short-lived and not a true dinosaur, especially from a behavioural perspective.
Edit: Oh, I just saw that that article was from 2002... if I remember correctly, the sperm and tissue were found to be inviable.

Considering the problems encountereed in the attempt to clone the Thylacine, which we wiped out only decades ago, it seems a bit of a long shot, but with time, and R & D, who knows. I imagine the arctic circles might hold some magnificently preserved specimens. It would be a heck of a fosil hunt.

Or we could just get a Burrunjor of ol' Rex Gilroy and clone it, eh Physce? Hehe

Sheesh an Australian Jurassic park lol. Next we will be cloning Steve Irwin to run it. Now that would be scary.

Dude, don't joke about Steve Irwin. The guys dead. Even though he was aussie, he was a good guy in my book.

Yea i agree that i would be verry hard to find a total dna strand.I also agrre with that it would not live long as all clones.
I also would like to bring up the fact that we would have a realy hard time not causing panic and the animal might get loose and cause havoc.

Way, way too far. How many laymen who wouldn't have given a sh** about reptiles otherwise watched his show? He took risks, and he knew it, but to him the cause was obviously worth it and now he and his work are household concepts.

Sorry if offended but seriously was not bagging Steve, Was just a comment on Cloning and where will it stop. As a Sunshine Coast boy I know more than most the impact Steve Irwin had.

OK. =)
Cloning itself is kinda dumb, the animal will always be shortlived unless we can find a way to lengthen telomeres. That's why getting viable sperm and creating a whole new baby is a much better method.
On that thought, what if you took sperm/ova from a clone? Would those too have the shortened telomeres or would they make a truly newborn creature?

Even if you do Clone Mammoths, it will eb a half breed anyway. You cant just grow it in a tube. Would have to be with an elephant. IF it works

I just watched TOTAL RECALL, man that movie rocks. Its awesome.
Mostar, soon we might be able to build our genetic engineering techniues beyond that primitive stage. If everyhting was a geneitic machine, vechiles, buildings, etc. the world would be a cleaner, greener, better place. But somehow people think its morally wrong... well screw them. The genome is the future baby! YEA-UH!

Spinosaurus is now 'king' of the Theropod diosaurs, now believed to be over 60 feet long, and this is based on only the second specimen, suggesting an unusually large one has yet to be found.
As for a place to keep them, how about our overcrowded prisons?

I think, bringing back the dinosaurs would be the biggest mistake man has made yet. I hope to never see that day lol.
