i was just seeing theres like 50something odd threads on the subject, but i thought id make one more.
i know theyre are theories on it, and one person posted a video about it as well. as to how we may get signals back from other people from the future? who are using one as well.
anyways, my point is this, for anyone who wanted to go back in time, change an event, then come to live in the present.....why? its pointless is it not? because you went back in time, changed something. and now youre living in a world, where what you 'changed' never even happened in the first place. so a waste of time? but then you say, 'well i changed it, so thats why it didnt happen'. but that doesnt matter, because your world now, doesnt know about what happened anyway. because it Never Happened.....right? and whos to say you would even remember changing it, once youre in the future?

But that is exactly the point of why someone would want to travel back in time. Ideally, if time travel were easy, people would go back in time and change events from happening that they felt were bad. For example, to save someone from death. The person who goes back in time is essentially sacrificing their own life in their time to change something in the past. This does become fairly redundant if you recognize that any attempt to change the past has to have already been attempted. Meaning that time is a one-way street, even if you somehow managed to go back in time, its not possible to actually change the course of any events. If it were possible to change something in the past, the version of you that changed it would still remember what they changed. Assuming you were trying to save yourself from some horrible thing, the version of you that was saved would be oblivious.

We live in linear time, whats to say time isn't more like a spherical spiders web (might not be the best thing to liken it to, but it is 1.40AM!) If someone went back in time, multiple new futures could open up.

EG: if we stopped one thing in the past, 2 new events could happen...the one we came from and the one we'd create...ie: the spiders web is forming. And, if we didn't get back to our own time but instead went into the new one and changed something, then another 2 time lines could appear, again the one it was supposed to be and the one we have created.

This would create what I think of as dimensions. Two parallel time lines, but each with different historical events.

And thinking about that has totally just fried my brain...so good night !

which means that the best we can do with time travel is watch.

linear, spherical, whatever, the thing everyone is missing is that just because someone draws a line or some other mark or shape in one direction (lets say from left to right ----->) that doesn't mean someone can't retrace back over the line <---- and then back to the spot it retraced from -----> rewriting over the past event they wanted to change and making the future different, without causing alternate time lines or having to worry about paradoxes (like you can't change the past because if you changed it it never would have occured and therefore you wouldn't have gone back in time to change it to begin with) You see, it's not that it didn't happen, it's that it was written over, it still happened that original way, but now an edit has been made and things have changed. In essence it's like updateing, upgrading, or modifying the past up to the present time you were at when you left. In this line of thought changing time can be done and you would still remember it.

The only weird result from this might be that everyone else might remember the alternate past as well which would cause confusion, but then again if you alone go back in time and come back, then you alone (the person redrawing the line) might remember what you drew over and no one else remember......which would work out well.

another way of thinking about the rewritting over time and changing it theory would be like this: For instance, you go to burger king and order some food, you leave burger king and after leaving realize the clerk didn't give you your change back. So... you go back in burger king talk to the clerk and get your proper change, then you leave burger king again. Now, at first you left the place without your change (what happened in time first), but then you went back and got your change so the second time you left you had your change with you (what happened when you went back in time and changed things). This is all normal time transition but I think time travel change would work the same way.......and just like how no one in burger king would give the event much thought maybe no one else would give much thought to the rewritten time line (if they even notice at all).

I think the best we could do is watch. Obviously, if you did go back to change something, like the death of a parent/child or something, then you would want to remain in the new time line you opened. Would that effectively kill you off in the time line you came from, or would there now be TWO yous?? Kinda like in the Jet Li film 'One'. Maybe we would unintentionally create a multiverse. The idea of dimensions is that they are parallel to our own time, but have different historical events, so I do beleive that changing the past would open up a new dimension though I'm unsure what effects it would have on our time, if at all.

I don't think we as humans can really understand the concept, its like trying to think what happened before the big bang.

Agent, I believe it is possible to time travel, you can read up on my views on my blog here at UM.
Time travel is a useless venture, as you would not be able to view the future accurately, and going to the past would cause you (the traveler) to be unable to re-unite with your origin time-line.

When you go back in time, lets say 10 days back, you are now in a situation where there are 2 of you. As you already know what your history is in your memory, your history has already been written in stone.
Lets say you interact with yourself, does this change anything in your memory? of course not, as you have not encountered your future self in your known memory. You could even convince your "Past" self not to take the time travel trip, and still it wont effect you, as you know, you havent been asked to not travel in your own history.

Now form this point on, if you travel again to the time that you left... in other words go fast-forwards 10 days, you still have 2 of you, plus an altered history for your past self.

The traveler effectively displaces himself when traveling into the past, you create effects that will exponentially cause different outcomes to your original history.



Lets erase the above scenario, and lets pretend you decided to travel 10 years into the future.
Now, of course you will see a future, however one without your presence for 10 years. Now if you returned to your origin time, you could report your findings, however they would be somewhat inaccurate, as now, your presence changes everything.

So Timetravel will never help the original timeline you have come from, everyone from your original timeline will go on without your presence, but there is a chance that an alternate you could have eventually returned to take your place (something to think about).

So I have come to the conclusion, time travel may only be of interest and benefit to the traveler, but not to mankind as a whole.

BTW, I'm not a scientist, just a "logical thinker" that writes Sci-fi. So my conclusions could be rubbish.

It pretty much is cool but useless. You could go forward in time but you are stuck there. There is no coming back. It might be interesting to see how things have changed, but it's also scary since you can't come back into your own time and since you pretty much have to start life new. Also, you can't travel into the past. None of the universe models allow that except for the Godel universe but that is a hypothetical model.

My stance on this issue, is that consciousness can move through time, not carbon based forms. A thought travels wherever it has to go instantly, physically we arent going anywhere, if we tried, it seems the physical would be annihilated. Just my thoughts.

I agree with Robbo. I dont think time travel as we percieve it is possible (atleast going backwards, forwards is a different thing completely). If you went back in time, you would instantly effect space time (even just observing) and therefore alter future events and create a new alternate dimension. The space time you came from will stay the same however the space time you currently inhabit will differ etc.

I also am not sure if its possible for matter to interchange between dimensions unless all of existence is intertwined somehow. So timetravel is cool however incredibly useless and potentially dangerous. Until we have a solid understanding of the universe we shouldn't even contemplate messing around with it.

I have a different opinion. Time travel could be possible, but in the past you could not change anything that is recorded. Anything you did would just be a part of what you remember as your past before you went back. So, ultimatlely, you could not change final results of the past.

Or in other words, if you went back in time, anything you did there would just result in the past that the present day you remembered as the past. You would be able to influence events, but only into the events that led to the history that the present day you remembered as recorded history.... furthermore, you would find that anything you did would only change the past into the history that the present day you remembered as the past.
There are many events that occured in the past that are not recorded. Who knows how they really happened...

So travel into the past is cool, but useless because you know what will happen already.... But you could see dinosaurs (which is what I would do).

travel into the future would be different every time you did it, becasue the future is decided by the events of the present which are ever-changing... Woe betide the future traveller...
