Right. I am looking to get a new Laptop. I just don't know whats that good!.

I have a Laptop at the moment that was bought for me as a present a couple of years ago. Its pretty slow and will be given to my daughter who its more than enough for.

What type of spec's should I be looking at?. I don't want to spend a fortune.
I normally just surf the net. Download every now and then and listen to my music on it. Nothing hardcore needed for gaming or whatever.

And also, am I better paying for one with XP rather than Vista?...I have heard alot of bad stuff about Vista.

Thank You x

I've just got an Acer Travelmate for £500. It's got a big screen (17"), and it seems to be very good. (I've used acer's quite a bit before).

I think Vista is probably OK-ish, provided you dont want to do anything complicated. (I'll be using this laptop for developing websites, and it's difficult to use Vista for that, so I HAD to get XP Pro on it).

It's a bit heavy, mind you. I tried using it on my lap, and after a while my knees fell off. sad.gif

i got ibm 1.6 1024mb laptop and its great, just great yes.gif not missed a beat since i had it, and thats now been 3 years.
The new ones are dual core, runs 2 progs at once and dont lose any speed, i think? if not dell they do some good offers as well online. dell are reliable from my experience.

If you're going for just surfing downloading and music, I strongly suggest a cheap HP. Over the last 10 years HP has had the most reliable hardware. I have a friend who's had one for over 5 years that still works (though a little bit slower).

You could easily go with the cheapest video card, RAM, and dual-core processor, and have the performance you want.

It says Compaq, but it's HP. HP just recently bought Compaq. I recommend the 1GB RAM rather than the basic 512, and the 160GB hard drive. The more space the better. If you end up needing more space than that, you can buy a pretty big external drive later.

But if you prefer Dell, they're not a bad company either.

I have always gone for HP, last couple have been Pavillions as I use them for entertainment purposes usually and have been really happy with them. Remember you are best getting 2 Gb of RAM to run Vista....mine has dual-core 2 Ghz and does everthing I ask of it.

Try going to the windows classic display rather then aero. Aero uses up it's fair share of resources and can be a drag.
