Greetings y'all, I just signed up here today and was wondering if you guys/gals could help shed some light on a situation I've experienced.

This occurred one evening around 9pm while I was trying to meditate. Now, I haven't been meditating that long and I'm not so sure that I know what I'm doing, but anyways... I was sitting on the floor cross legged in my bedroom, and I was positioned so I was facing my coffee table, and my entertainment center was to my back. After a while of trying to clear my mind I started seeing strange colors in my head. They were very faint and pale, but they would flash in an almost random sequence, mainly blues and greens and soft reds. My entire body started to tingle and I started experiencing something along the lines of lightheadedness. I felt myself almost start to melt...sort of like a snowman in spring but sped up. I felt myself almost flow from my head downward over my body and then started spreading out on the floor. I felt myself almost flowing outwards and this giant "puddle" I became started crawling up the coffee table and entertainment stand, it felt like I was "becoming" those objects. Like if I were to reach out and touch the table I would be touching another part of myself. This only lasted about 5 minutes max before I lost focus and snapped back to reality. I was wondering if any of you have experienced this before or perhaps know what it was???

Hi, Pry.

Welcome aboard.

About one in three US and UK adults reports having had at least one similar experience, according to public opinion polls conducted regularly since the 1960's by Gallup and similar competing firms. Actual affirmative response rates vary according to how the question is worded (as is typical of poll questions). No systematic difference has ever been found between those who do and those who not report such an experience (not yet?).

Searchable terms these days are things like "cosmic consciousness" and "enlightenment." "Peak experience" is still in use, though it is out-of-fashion lately. An early detailed report from an identified and uncontroversially real person is Alfred Lord Tennyson's (reprinted in William James' Varieties of Religious Experience). A more recent and equally typical report on the web is

(I do not endorse the author's interpretation of her experience, which seems to touch every New Age cliche twice, but the experience itelf is illustrative of the category.)

That said, your own specifics seem to have much in common with the character Odo on Deep Space Nine. That does not mean you borrowed from him, since the Star Trek folks have long been interested in New Age themes, and may have used this specific idea in creating their fictional character.

While not everyone's experience is pleasant, whatever it is, it is intense. Glad that yours was fun. Mine, too.

Colours and tingling sensations can be pretty common during meditation for some, it sounds like you were possibly feeling the sensations of your energy/consciousness expanding. Was it all by feel or did you also see the impression of yourself 'flowing' out?

Its was all by feel, I had my eyes shut during meditation and for a while there I may have forgotten I had eyes.

It doesn't sound like anything to be worried about and it can take some people a long time to get this kind of stage with meditation. Keep with it, keep exploring and see how it goes (excuse the pun tongue.gif lol)
