Unexplained Mysteries Discussion Forums > Science > Natural World

The world we live in today is filled with human pollution. We have fossil fuels burning and many other airborn pullutants. Though what happens when were gone. One day maybe not tomorrow maybe not in hundred years it will happen. Scientist say it can and possibly will happen. What will earth be like. After were gone scientists say that since we wont be burning fossil fuels power will fail. Since we have to be here to pump the fossil fuels in to a blast furnace they wont burn. The air pollution caused by that will cease. Though it will only last for a caculated two days. The normal pollution caused by such things as hair spray will stop as well. This means the pollution caused by this will stop/ Things such as nuclear power plants may shutdown. With out human matience they say that the reactors go into a safe shutdown mode after two days. So what happens. the living creatures in our world will start to rule again. The things that probally wont make it. Is domesticated animals. Animals such as reptiles in tanks and birds in cages and dogs that are full time house dogs will probally die. Though most will survive. These animals will resort to scavaging since they havent been taught how to hunt properly. Though in about twenty years the animals will be fully equiped to survive witho out the help of humans. Some animals that we thought relied on humans will survive. Things like pigeons will make a full recovery they will survive. They will feed off things such as insects and fruits that grow naturally. The other animals things that were actually wild will take to the cities as there new turf. They will hunt in large cities once ruled by humans. Though our structures that were once mantained by humans will begin to crumble under natures fury. They plants that cling to building such as ivey but larger plants that their roots go up higher objects will go into small cracks and as they begin to soak up water they will expand pushing the concrete further and further away. Then eventually cracking and making the buildings crumble. Though once endangered species will make a recovery. Without the threat of human poaching them they will begin to repopulate and then become a natural species once again roaming the earth. This is what it possibly could be like after were gone.

I don't know if the show on the History Channel caused this post, but it sounds very very similar. If it is the source of it, you might want to mention that.

How are all humans to disappear at once, with no warning so that they don't shut off the power plants or set their pets free?

It will probably last for hundreds, if not thousands, of years. I wonder what the decay rate is for all the garbage we've created in the last few centuries?

I think caged birds that haven't been moved drastically out of their natural habitat will survive. A few dogs might not survive but most will form packs and will go right back to wolf-hood. Look at what happened in New Orleans after Katrina. Two months later the city was swarming with puppies! I don't know this for sure, but I think there are very few animals that couldn't survive without humans. The animals that will die are the ones that have been moved out of their natural habitats.

Then eventually cracking and making the buildings crumble.
Our structures will become archaeological relics, very gradually reverting back to earth.

Squid and octopi will evolve to live on land and possibly create civilizations.

wink2.gif There ya go.
I watched that show. Didn't really excite me. "Oh wow you mean without people animals and plants would just take over?!" That falls under the 'no ____ Sherlock' file. I even managed to stay immune to the -- look how horrible man kind treats the earth, wouldn't it be better without him -- vibe it started giving off. I much more enjoyed a program Animal Planet ran a couple of years ago where they postulated some post-human evolution and the animals that would appear.
And yes, there was a land-walking squid the size of an elephant! LOL.
~Cheese~

Just watch History Channel because their airing a series about this subject original.gif

Think so. The two critters that stuck in my mind were the giant landwalking squids and the penguins the size of whales. LOL.

It's complicated because things don't just disappear - they change. The tyrannosaurus is gone but its traits still exist in animals today. It could actually return if the environment went back to the way it was. If the modern man were eradicated entirely, the traits and functions would still continue. Other animals might start to become bipedal and begin taking on the same traits of the modern man, even if our DNA were completely gone.

All mass extinctions so far have been caused by climate change, with the exception of the one that wiped out the dinoaurs. This means that fairly soon (on a geological timescale) over 50% of life on earth is likely to go extinct. this may include humans.

After humans are gone, yet more creatures will die out as a result. Domestic animals like sheep, cows and horses, which are dependent on man, will disappear. Many breeds of domestic dog will also go, though probably not all of them. I reckon that cats will survive because they're generally not massively changed from their wild ancestors.

Other animals will benefit greatly from the fall of humanity. Animals like rats and mice will be able to feed on the waste we leave behind without us trying to stop them. Foxes might do quite well in this situation also.

The world probably wouldn't start to flourish again for a few million years, after the atmosphere has been reset.

According to a book I read, rats will benefit so much that they may evolve to become top of the food chain. Bats, while not as a direct result of human extinction, may also become highly adapted predators. So the most commonly accepted theory is that the future will belong to the rodents and/or chiropterans.

A book on the subject, a very good one too.

From all the reading I've done on this very subject... it wouldn't take as long as most of you think.

Within 10 years, most roads will begin being reduced to rubble

Within 20 years, houses will begin falling appart, due to trees and roots digging into the foundations.

Within 30 years, cities will begin looking like forests with crumbling monuments.

Within 40 years, most animals will have completely reestablished, lions in north america, wolves in africa, the balance of nature will be very strong.

Within 50 years, not a single place on earth will look the same, your backyard will look like the middle of a lush field with forests or jungle reinvigorating and really, really pushing through.

Within 75 years, most houses will have fallen appart and trees, grasses, plants will begin growing through.

Within 100 years, the world will be a wild place again, most cities will have fallen apart, sure there will be rubble... but NOTHING is more powerful than nature.

Within 200 years, the algea will be a problem... less CO2 = more O2, which can be VERY VERY bad... this could result in an Ice Age...

Ice ages come and go... if you were to take the time after the dinosaurs, and put it on a 24 hour clock... humans have been around for the last 6 seconds before midnight. We've been around for the blink of an eye... and it will take even less than that to heal.
