Hi chaps,

I'm certain someone here can help me.

I have noticed how some forumers use pictures as their signature, and would like to know how this is done.

I have tried to add a picture as an IMG but I'm not having any luck.

Any ideas where I am going wrong.

wacko.gif I'm lost.

thanks thumbsup.gif

You should be able to add an image with [IMG] tags in your signature in the same way as you would add one to an ordinary post, as long as you have a URL to where the image file is located.

Is the image stored on a remote server, or is it on your own computer ?
*MoG*
on my computer
Saru
Ok, you can't use IMG tags for adding pictures stored on your own computer, the image needs to be on-line somewhere.

Unfortunately attachments aren't supported in signatures, so you'll need to get the file uploaded to a web server before you can add it. If you e-mail the image file to me, i'll upload it to the UM server for you if you like.

My e-mail address is : webmaster@unexplained-mysteries.com

Thanks Saruman for the offer but its only a silly picture and of no real importance.

You have enough to do already (and you do it very well thumbsup.gif ) without me messing you about.

Thanks again.

oh but ive seen really cool personalised signatures like seraphinas, talons and xenogens! how did they get those?
Saru
They must have made them themselves in Photoshop or other graphics package, then uploaded them and added a link in their signatures.

Unfortunately the forum doesn't have any facilities for generating custom signature graphics, so they'd need to be custom made.
LittleIrishVampiress
ah pooey! disgust.gif thanx anyway dear! wink2.gif
LittleIrishVampiress
saru, why wont my image show?! it just says "user posted image" which isnt as appealing...
Saru
Check the URL of the image, the one you're using there seems to be wrong.

I tried it in the browser myself but it says the file doesn't exist, it's likely you've just made a typo somewhere in the link.

LittleIrishVampiress
k, i gonna try another one and i betcha it wont work disgust.gif could you try to get this next one aswell please? could it be bcuz the image is a moving one?
LittleIrishVampiress
see! this one dont work either!!! and its so cute... crying.gif
Saru
Again, you've got the wrong URL in the link, i've tried this one in the browser as well as the image you're linking to doesn't exist.

What you need to do is go back to that web site and check to make sure you have the link typed in properly, and that the image still exists there. The picture will work in your signature if you put the link in correctly.

Moe, i'm not sure Geocities support remote linking, so that may be why it's not appearing. Some web space providers have remote linking disabled to stop folk from using the space to store files for use elsewhere.

For the interests of people who want outside linking heres the well known free sites, and whether they support offsite linking:

Geocities: Does support offsite linking however the picture must be renamed a .TXT file, and it must be a jpeg. But most forums (like this one) cannot support .txt as a picture file (you get a error, maybe saru could swing something for this?).
Geocities

Tripod: Doesn't support offsite linking, it replaces the picture file with a advert for tripod.

Angelfire: The best free site for offsite linking, you don't have to change the filename. I use this and i recommend it.
Angelfire

Or alternatively you could ask me to host your image, pm/mail me i will gladly do so.

Note: for images to be linked to your profile, they must be under 50k in size, and not too big to make the page "stretch" (which annoys).

hey moe, does ur sig pic move? coz ive tried loads and everything works except the ones that move. disgust.gif

my question is, how does an picture have an individual URL? i tried doing this, but the pictures themselves have no URL, just the site i got it from. it ends up as a link to the site, not a picture.

I know, but I'm not going to tell you. We'll end up rating them for you.

Like Aslan said, they're all a 6. So, why bother? laugh.gif

laugh.gif until someone starts a 'rate the previous persons signature' game, no bodys going to be rating it. especially if its mine. icon_mrgreen.gif

Geocities does NOT, I know this for a fact. However, tripod does. So you may want to get an account there.

I know for a fact that I will get an account at Tripod when the flying pigs flap their little wings so hard that hell freezes over. laugh.gif

*wonders why people are talking about offsite linking hen he already put up a guide for free sites...* >_>

Like i explained earlier geocities do....you just have to change the file to .txt not .jpg. but unfortunately this forum does not support .txt as a valid picture file.
