Wikipedia on Deus Ex Machina.

In an increasingly unstable and volatile world (cue Tom Clancy plot and music) where world factions and resources are battling it out against each other's throats in a rising crescendo, what unexpected element might intervene to somehow ease us out of this situation? Moreover, what if this element does not wish to intervene, but rather encourage us to best deal with it ourselves - so that we get the most growth out of it and do not repeat past mistakes of depending upon others to clean up our mess?

2012: alien invasion? Extraterrestrial or Ultradimensional first contact? Wormhole opening up? A door into the past and a chance to communicate with generations past and present?

And last but not least, what color shirt do I have on?

Discuss.

I think a major event would make ppl stop “at least for a while” and reflect about the things they are doing. Thought, this major event must be something that in some way (contradicts our current beliefs) Ex. We are not the only thinking life form in the universe and we are not creation of a God. A discovery like this would make ppl stop and think about a lot of things. So, if an intelligent alien civilization make contact, and show us that we are not creation of God, I think a lot o things would change. Maybe the killings in the name of God would stop and all nations could live and think and work as one (even this being unlikely to happen)

What I mean is: A lot of ppl believe we are creation of God and Jesus is/was his son and we have a lot of “rules” to follow… But what if we discover that we are not creation of a God and that there is another intelligent civilization, thousands of hundreds of years older than us and a lot more advanced than us. Would our beliefs in religion change? Would the muslins change their way of thinking or Catholics ask forgiveness for all supposed witches burned alive by inquisitors?

Would ppl still believe in resurrection of Christ after such an event?

If Jesus is son of our God, who are the alien civilization God and savior?

See, such an event would raise a lot of questions and I think it could cause 2 reactions in our society:

1-Mass hysteria and suicides and fear and ppl saying that the anti Christ is here, bla bla bla.

2-Ppl would have a lot to discuss and stop the daily BS we doing these days…

Something I've always wondered as well...

Who says they need to be saved? Maybe they're already "in synch" with the divine.

Im not sure about other countries, but Australia is a non religious country. Many, many people still believe in religion, however it doesnt effect government policies or foreign policy or even social views and lawmaking. I think this is how the vast majority of western countries exist now. So if aliens came down and told us we arent the creation of god it wouldnt effect a large chunk of the global population in anyway. It would however screw up a fair bit of the USA and middle east.

You have to remember that alot of wars used religion as an excuse to go steal land or kill someone you had a dispute with. So removing religion won't make the world a happy place overnight.

I think something that needs to happen is a global space agency, as it stands we have european, japan, china, USA, russian space agencies working seperately. Even though they all share the same technology from different countries. Would much rather an Earth flag planted on Mars rather than the USA or any other countries flag. Basically, i dont think an external force is going to change how we see ourselves. Change is going to have to happen from within if we want to better society.

It wouldn't take extraterrestrials appearing to reveal that we are not the creation of a god. We've already discovered that, a hundred and fifty years ago, and every year theres newer and newer discoveries which have put us in our place. Now, most believers adapt their believes to the unforgiving universe we live in, others rampantly deny and attack the truth. Why would it be any different if ET showed up?

I want there to be intervention from an external, intelligent, and wise source so as to speed up the process of our species development into an empathetic wise species who uses their intelligence to solve suffering and death, rather than to create perpetual cycles of it just to feed off of the chaos for monetary and physical gains. Wow...I guess I liked star trek more than I realised. blink.gif

So here an intervention by an outside source not necessary to our story would speed up the process , save lives ( in theory ) , and allow me...to see whats going on for once.

If only we could just ask them. But unfortunetly it seems , that if they do exist and are coming to our world, they may have read Aristotle's opinion and agreed with him. But then again, maybe they are impatient too.

Has anyone ever made a serious attempt to contact a UFO?

As far as I know, which isn't much, I don't think so. There have been reports that the Ufos seem to reacte to flashlights. Perhaps that would be a means to communicate with them. But there are also reports, if true, that it may be dangerous to do so.

How would one go about such a thing? This is a good question you bring up.
