Medford, Wis. - (AP) - Frank Oresnik is on the verge of making history driving his old standby - the pickup truck he says is about to pass the 1 million mile mark.

Oresnik said the 1991 Chevrolet Silverado is 1,200 miles from a million, and once he hits the mark he will retire the vehicle.

He credits proper maintenance and a good measure of luck for allowing the truck to rack up so many miles. He said he's had more than 300 oil changes and tuneups, going in every 3,000 miles.

The truck has had four radiators, three gas tanks, five transmissions and six water pumps, but the engine has never been overhauled, Oresnik said.

He bought the Silverado in June 1996 with 41,000 miles on it. Oresnik uses the vehicle to deliver seafood in three states, putting on about 85,000 miles a year.

Ok. I've got a question on this one. The truck is a 1991 model. That's not terribly old. Why would he need to replace the gas tank three times ? Gas tanks don't go bad do they ? Why would it even need replaced once ?

I did have to replace the fuel pump in my Ford truck last year. And it is in fuel tank. Requiring me to drop the fuel tank. But then I just cleaned it out and reused it.

Maybe I'm missing something here.

Five or six years back there was a guy on the news who had put a million miles on a volvo and the company gave him a new car. He said the only thing he ever had to replace was one piston.

I've seen Toyota engines(especiall the 22R truck engine) go 500,000 miles, but A MILLION, damn. I would wonder about the gas tanks as well, only thing I could think of is a residual problem with the tank that could only be fixed by replacing a part that only came with the purchase of the whole gas tank. For example, I just got through looking-up a part for a '93 Toyota Supra, the part my customer was looking for was only available as an assembly with the whole drive shaft, not seperately.
