I only today learned of the Blue Ringed Octopus.
The blue-ringed octopus is the size of a golf ball but its poison is powerful enough to kill an adult human in minutes. There's no known antidote. The only treatment is hours of heart massage and artificial respiration until the poison has worked its way out of your system. The last thing the victim sees are the blue rings - visible only when it is about to attack.

Apparently it's the most venomous animal known to man. It is even more dangerous than the Aussie snakes. (i.e. Browns snake, Inland Taipan etc). Why are all the most dangerous also the most beautiful?

Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder.
In nature, bright colors often means POISONOUS!!! STAY AWAY!!!! Thus many poisonous animals are brightly colored to warn off predators. A good example are the poisonous tree frogs found in the Amazons and in Africa, they comes in bright colors and patterns: yellow, red, orange, etc.

Actually the blue ringed Octopus is quite dull in colour unless provoked . Thats when the rings become obvious there a warning sign .
Coming from Australia I've seen more than my fair share of these wee beasties.

How often are people actually bitten and killed by these things?
As you go blind in seconds after being bitten, the last thing you ever see are
the blue rings.

Yes, the Blue ring octopus was the symbol for Octopussy's "cult" or smuggling organization. The woman have one as a pet in her aquarium.

http://library.thinkquest.org/C007974/2_1b...x.htm?tqskip1=1BTW Blue Ringed Octopus sometimes are found at the right time of the year in the dark in sea puddles on the beach giving birth, it is then that they are at their most aggressive.
