I have a good friend who saw a lunar eclipse in 1976. It was between 8-10pm (most likely) in Tennessee and it wasn't a total eclipse, but he has always been troubled by what he saw. He was with a group of other teenagers and all they saw was a cloud traveling in front of the eclipse, while he saw what he describes as 'demons' dancing around in front of it. I said I would try and find out what I could, I also thought I remembered hearing or reading something similar years ago, but I can't recall any details. Everything I'm finding on Google isn't what I'm looking for.
Any help or direction would be appreciated. To this day that 'vision' bothers him. Thank you.
Very likely, all that was seen was the passage of some wispy altostratus or cirrostratus clouds, which, combined with the hour of night, and the somewhat reddish color of the moon, and the fact that clouds of varying thickness passing in front of the moon create pulsing, moving variations, created a visual which was interpreted as demons by this young person. It's called pareidolia, which is a rather common human psychological capability (think of the man in the Moon, hidden messages being heard on records played in reverse, seeing faces in the clouds, etc...).
What's not common is to be disturbed about such things for three decades.
It was likely a very common phenomenon of the human psyche...nothing to be disturbed about.
