A young man, a student of journalism, is sentenced to death by an Islamic court for downloading a report from the internet. The sentence is then upheld under the democratic rule of the West's ally Hamid Karzai

Sayed Pervez Kambaksh was accused of blasphemy after he downloaded a report from a Farsi website which stated that Muslim fundamentalists who claimed the Koran justified the oppression of women had misrepresented the views of the prophet Mohamed.

Mr Kambaksh, 23, distributed the tract to fellow students and teachers at Balkh University. But a complaint was made against him and he was arrested, tried by religious judges without being allowed legal representation and sentenced to death.

Mr Karzai has the right to intervene and pardon Mr Kambaksh. However, even if he is freed, it would be hard for the student to escape retribution in a country where fundamentalists and warlords are increasingly in the ascendancy.

Oh sh-! Don't they have freedom or something? There are worse things that can happen to a religion, any recall those stories of Church Burnings? I thought that case with the woman and the stuffed bear was bad enough.

I was looking for an up date on this, but I can't seem to find one. Has this guy been released or is he still wait for his sentence to be carried out?

Venue Changed For Appeal By Afghan Journalist On Death Row
KABUL -- An appeal by a journalism student sentenced to death in northern Afghanistan on blasphemy charges has been transferred to Kabul in order to ensure a fair hearing, RFE/RL's Radio Free Afghanistan reports.

Afghan Attorney-General Abdul Jabar Sabet announced the change of venue in Kabul on February 27, saying that further proceedings would take place in open court.

At least he will now get a trial that will be presented in open court with the whole world watching.
