I recently became aware of H.Res 888 after doing some research on religion in the US government.

QUOTE
110th CONGRESS

1st Session

H. RES. 888
Affirming the rich spiritual and religious history of our Nation's founding and subsequent history and expressing support for designation of the first week in May as `American Religious History Week' for the appreciation of and education on America's history of religious faith.

QUOTE
Resolved, That the United States House of Representatives----

(1) affirms the rich spiritual and diverse religious history of our Nation's founding and subsequent history, including up to the current day;

(2) recognizes that the religious foundations of faith on which America was built are critical underpinnings of our Nation's most valuable institutions and form the inseparable foundation for America's representative processes, legal systems, and societal structures;

(3) rejects, in the strongest possible terms, any effort to remove, obscure, or purposely omit such history from our Nation's public buildings and educational resources; and

(4) expresses support for designation of a `American Religious History Week' every year for the appreciation of and education on America's history of religious faith.

It sounds like a fairly benign resolution especially if it does celebrate a "diverse religious history", however if you read the full text:

http://www.govtrack.us/congress/billtext.xpd?bill=hr110-888

it becomes obvious that they are talking ONLY about the Christian religion, no other religions or beliefs are mentioned.

If that were not enough, it appears that some of the information brought forward by proponents of the resolution is only partially factual.

Here is a very interesting read, it certainly opened my eyes.......

While other religions should be included, if they had an influence, it should be noted that the major religion of the founding fathers and the moral system on which the government was constructed *is* based primarily on Christianity.

They should either make an effort to cite some examples of other religious influences outside of Christianity, or drop the "diverse" buzzword.

Well, considering the founding fathers werent the christians everyone would have you think they were; they were deists; hence the ambiguous language in the documents that framed the coiuntry. The churches love to say that this founder was a devout christian or that founder was a pious man who wanted the country to be run by christians for christians, that was not the case.

Read a few biographies of the founding fathers...you will be surprised. They were not what the church would have you believe them to be.

I think you have to ask yourself why is it so important to focus on the religion(s) that the founding fathers were influenced by?

I can see how they may want to set time aside to really learn about the founding of America, and the people behind it, but why focus ONLYon their religious beliefs?

Certain things about this don't add up, especially some of the claims made with the resolution. Some of them are based on quotes taken out of context, some based on half truth's and some that appear to be just plain wrong.

If anybody needs a lesson on American History, apparently it's some of the people involved in pushing this resolution. IMO

Where's the clause recognising the role of the french enlightenment and freemasonry ideas in the formation of the country? Infact the west might not be the way it was if not for the enlightenment and french revolution.

Very true Fluffybunny, not only that but where in the heck is the nod to native beliefs? The US is just about hopeless about understanding that this nation wasn't empty when the white folks showed up. If we want to celebrate beliefs that are American, then lets cover them ALL not just what the pushy, loud, vocal christian right minority would like us to cover. You can't rewrite history and you can't ignore the well over five hundred nations of Native Culture religion and belief out there.

It will be interesting to see how far this resolution goes, I really hope it won't go much further.

It is also interesting to note that the representative who put this resolution forward is the same one who in 2005, helped form
The Congressional Prayer Caucus.

QUOTE
The Congressional Prayer Caucus – an official caucus of the U.S. House – to formally acknowledge their conviction of the important role that prayer plays in American life and history and to monitor and work to guard the right of individuals in America to pray.

Their vision served as the inspiration to form a private, non-partisan, non-profit foundation designed to encourage and support the call of America back to prayer – The Congressional Prayer Caucus Foundation, Inc.

QUOTE
On November 18, 2005 certain Members issued a formal "Call to Prayer for America" - a call to "pray without ceasing" for God to heal our land (1 Thes. 5:17).

The Congressional Prayer Caucus Foundation wants to call America back to prayer by asking God’s people:

To join Members of Congress in praying that God will bless and sustain America;
To form 219 Groups in homes and churches for the purpose of praying for America;
To commit to a five-minute prayer segment one day a week (equivalent to a spiritual brick), which, when united with other partners around the United States, will form an unbroken spiritual prayer wall around our nation.
