Aliens could misinterpret earth's classic songs as declarations of war if they are recklessly broadcast into space, some scientists say.\

*sigh* ppl need to stop being so paranoid and thinking that everyone is out to get them

Wow...
tigger, I'd say your statement above is, although certainly true, hardly sufficient to express the import of this article.

whew... wacko.gif

Professor Barrie Jones of Open University said: "the chances are slight, but the consequences would be huge — the end of life on Earth".

"If they have the technology to cross interstellar space to reach us, they will be so much in advance of us humans that there is nothing we could do to resist them," he said.

I'd love to know..."Professor" of what? Ufology, perhaps?

This statement is a reflection of the state of much of "higher education" these days.
I just have to say, the statement is moronic in its utter lack of rational thought.

Think of this!

Last week NASA broadcast a Beatles song, Across the Universe, towards the North Star, in the hope it would be noticed by extra-terrestrial beings.

But scientists have urged NASA to be more cautious, saying aliens could misinterpret the song, and even take it as a battle cry.

Utterly amazing...
Beyond belief, actually.
Probably the same scientists who's man-made global warming hypothesis has recently been somewhat shredded by their peers who actually adhere to the scientific method.

"Across the Universe" being interpreted as a battle cry???
Lord, even humans, in their drug induced best, couldn't possibly interpret that song as having anything to do with a declaration of war...how much less could any intelligent alien race who might, one day long in the future, hear it...full of idiom, poetry, and lyrics of different languages?!

Sometimes, the level to which human stupidity rises is beyond my capacity to accept.

In that special on Discovery Channel about Earth after humans, they mentioned that Earth radio signals that are being beamed into space decay after they reach a certain distance. Wouldn't that limitation put a bit of a stint in this theory? I'm not sure how far it would need to go before that happens, but I'd assume not far enough to reach alternate life.

I think you're absolutely correct...decay of signal strength would put a bit of a hinderance on reception, and thus, possible wacked out interpretations of gentle songs as declarations of war!

I know I get pissed when I have bad reception on the radio
