Some time in July last year, I was on a hike with some members of my Scout Group. We went into some woods and while we were in there, we all seemed to be a bit frightened and edgy. Some of my friends said that they felt someone was following/watching them whereas others just were a lot quieter than usual. The feeling got worse when we were in the middle of the forest, people could hear twigs snapping and bushes rustling. Even the group leaders were looking a bit scared now and one of them said that we should hurry up and get out of here. Almost everyone by now felt that something was following them. Somehow I got the idea that this was some creature of darkness which was afraid of light so I shined my torchlight where most of the sounds were coming from.
Then, something large just sprinted in front of us at amazing speed! I think that only me and one of the group leaders saw it (which is strange as it was quite big). I screamed, someone asked me what was wrong and I said that some animal had just ran in front of us. One of the leaders said that they had seen something too but said that it was only a fox. This was absolutley ridiculous as it looked nothing like a fox (see creature description). We eventually got out of the woods and into a suburban area. We felt something following us again and all around us, just about simultaenously, dogs started barking and a whole flock of birds in the trees flew away. We were nearly at the end of the hike now and someone suggested that we jog the rest of the way. Everyone did.
Creature Description
Size: Between a large dog and a horse
Hair?: No
How many legs?: Four
Description: Was moving very fast so I couldn't really see much. It was greyish-brown and looked sort of like a small horse with no ears. However, it was larger than a Great Dane. As I saw it I felt terrified and it seemed to almost radiate darkness.
So, have you seen/felt anything like this or know what it might have been?

Probably a large dog. Or a horse. In fact, you pretty much explained that for yourself.

4 legs and fast !!! color resembles a coyote , size of a deer . Probably a woodland animal such as a coyote and a deer . Deer are grey in color , depending on temp , and when thet run full speed , U WILL NOT see the ears . Not trying to deny what u saw but , it sounds like everyone there was freightened by something they couldn't explain. Im not a non-beleiver , but just sounds too commom .

It was probably a doe or fawn.
Deer rarely make any sounds. I note that you made no mention of any animal like sounds.
What part of the country was this in?

Probably wasn't a coyote, this was in England, I suppose it could have been a deer
One thing though which I forgot to mention, it was going VERY fast. I mean Very, it was almost a blur and made no sound at all, almost as if flying with it's legs a few inches of the ground!
This was quite a small wood compared to some, probably only a mile radius and surrounded by various main roads and towns. I don't know if that's the type of wood for deer to live

Sounds odd for a deer to be in such a small area.Is there woods around on the other sides of the roads?Or mabey a large forest nearby?

instinct says bear [theyre noisy]
and can surprisingly move fast
if you sense a predator you will naturally freak even if you are unaware of it.
although i dont know if england has bears so.
the alternative may be shadow being. but highly unlikely.

darkness and fear can really f*ck with peoples perceptions. Could have been anything really.
not saying that i don't believe you, just trying to come to a conclusion of what it could've been.
and i've (kinda) been to Oaks Park, nice place

Sounds like a deer.Deer can move extremely fast, fast enough that you wouldn't be able to see the ears or tell wat kind of skin/fur it had. Also deer can be found in small areas of woods.I live on the edge of a small area of woods about a 1/2 mile across and 2 miles long, and we see deer in there all the time. Also someone mentioned that deer don't make much noise. There could have well been a coyote prowling around, scared the deer, which is why it went blazing passed you.
As for the fear and "darkness" you felt, that's typical of being in the woods at nite. You heard noises,so you got uneasy, you heard more noises,ur imagination started running wild,u subconsiously assume that watever is making the noise is folowwing u,and so-on.
I'm not trying to totally disprove that u might have seen sumthin unusual, just saying that it could very well be something toally common.

I have to agree with the deer hypothesis as well. Same size, same color, fast-moving, and definitely can live in small woods. We have a small herd (about 4-5 deer) in a woodlot near our supermarket - a lot less than half a mile square.

hmm i find it hard to believe it to be a horse, it would have made more noise wouldn't it? Then again you did scream at the time. maybe d some research on the area, local fauna ect.

I didn't see it mentioned. Are you a city dweller or live in the country. My Son in Law went camping with my wife and I and was unable to sleep all night not long ago. He was born and raised in a large city, so sleeping in the woods with all the wild life around making noises was some thing he just was not used to.
And the Wild turkeys roosting in the tree near us was a bit much!

For the benifit of non UK readers the poster said that he was in an area known as Oaks Park Surrey England ......... Surrey is a London suberb with a mainly affluent population, it's not as built up as the city but like most places in the London area the houses (although they cost a fortune)are still fairly close together, its going to be an area of manicured gardens and water features, the most open space is probably the golf course ....... The UK don't get any of the good stuff like coyotes, bears, timber wolves, or even wild turkeys the biggest animal you would expect to find in this area other than an escaped pony is a fox or a maybe a dog but our laws in the UK are so restrictive and the city so overpopulated that even a dog out on its own would be caught and placed in the pound.
Your not allowed a fire even in your back garden unless its a bar-b-Q and anyone who tried to camp out under the stars these days inside the M25 (a motorway that surrounds London) would be have to be sectioned as mental because if the drunks didn't get you then the chavs would and if they didn't you would be arrested for vagrancy or soliciting

But if you managed to get left alone for the night you wouldn't hear anything of the wildlife for the passing traffic, hovering Police helecopters, Aircraft from either Heathrow or Gatwick, Ambulance sirens, and drunks pi££ing in the bushes on their way home ............. you have no idea how lucky you are

I'm pretty sure i saw something very similar, only it was in a suburb area. i was walking my dog, who's a very large shepherd mix, weighs around 110 pounds. anyways, i was approaching the base of a hill, it was around 9:50 Pm, and something about 40 feet ahead darted across the street and behind a trailer. it was the same size as u described. between a large dog and a small horse. i couldn't tell if it had ears or not, but i did get the same dark feeling, and my dog began to growl.
another similar incident took place at my friends house. he lives about a mile away, and his house is against a canyon. anyways, i had just gone to get some food with him, and i was walking him back to his house with my dog. he went inside and i turned to leave, but my sister stopped me. her exact words were "oh my god, did you just see it? i swear i saw something". she described it as something running on four legs and between the size of a large dog and small horse. she said it had no ears too. she was describing it when my dog started to growl again, we turned back towards the house and saw something running fast into the canyon.
sorry this was so long, just thought you deserved to know that you might not be the only one who saw this thing. I've seen it twice now, and I've been a little nervous since. my sister who saw it is only nine, so i told her it was just a dog.

Sounds like a discription of a Chupacabra ~ rumored to inhabit parts of the Americas (size between a large dog and a deer). First reported sightings were of a strange animal in Puerto Rico ~ Mexico, and the United States, especially in the latter's Latin American communities. Physical descriptions of the creature vary. Eyewitness sightings have been claimed as early as 1990 in Puerto Rico, and have since been reported as far north as Maine, and as far south as Chile.

Chupacabras are always mentioned in the context of a cryptoid attacking livestock. Cattle mutilations as they are called have a longer history than the chupacabra and the chupacabra is just one explanation or theory of why cattle mutilations occur.
