That's when I'll have my car paid off.

Maybe, just maybe my Raiders will have had long enough to rebuild and take a shot at the playoffs. Maybe.

The mayan calendar running out of days, the earth switching it's poles, and alien dragons from the planet Niburu are expected to arrive for lunch. Though they maybe aren't as bad as their reputation.

No, actually i hear they're great cooks, don't even need ovens, they can fire bake all by themselves.

The mayan calendar running out of days is definate. The other two are guesses.

I think they mean the earth flipping over so that the north pole will be where the south pole is now.

Of course, there is always the LHC, Large Hadron Collider, a new particle accelerator in Switzerland which will start operations May 2008, with no previous testing. It is predicted to create minature black holes which might sink to the center of the earth before they dissipate, and destroy everything. Or create "strange matter" which will never dissipate, and destroy everything. Either way, there won't be any humans left for the dragons to eat.

and what does th lhc accomplish? ive never heard of it

The LHC is a particle accelerator of a size never seen before on earth. It is designed to break matter down to it's smallest components to give us more information about the foundation of matter and space.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Large_Hadron_Collider

Worth reading about, it should be the source of a large number of physics break-throughs.

but scientists are willing to risk destroying everything just to learn about matter and space?

well i thought the myths about 2012 was different, that it would start with a great enlightenment before we were capable of seing the lizards here on earth, one of my friends told me about the myth he had read that stated we would be capable of using a center of our brain better so that they could not decieve us into believeing they were normal humans, but i'm also gonna be 22 in 2012:P dunno what else would happen

Absolutely right, not that i take those theories for good on the fact that they come from sources that can be interprettet in so many a different way that it could even just be a cookbook, but the lizardmen, the annunakis and some other alienraces would start a war to see who were to be the masters of the human race, the annunakis were said to have created us through genetic manipulation and i can't remember the lizards role in this, but either you see the lizards as the evil ones who want to sacrifice and eat us, or the smart ones who want to keep us out of slavery. nut 2012 were only to be the year of enlightenment as i remember it, can't say for sure though, and wouldn't be able to say for sure in anyways if i could remember the myh:P

There is nothing going to happen in 2012.... It's like all the prophecies made about 1999 and the year 2000...

While I can't say that nothing significant won't happen that year I can say that prophecy is total BS.
ThePitOfReason
Well if you would like a forcast of the year 2012 we have the ability to gamble on nothing but speculation. The basic truth is no one knows it could be just another year and bunch of folks sitting around on New Years Eve waiting like they did in 1999

Only God knows no one else. Sure some people may predict the rise and fall of nations but no human can predict the end of time.

More than a skeptic about this subject myself but everyone has the right to have faith in what ever they wish.

Sure I can. "The end of time" inevitably comes when all astral bodies active in our solar system cease to revolve and rotate, since at that point there will effectively be no way to keep time. Time is a human creation. Once its measurer is gone, the creation is gone.
Zackery00
Given the fact that it is only 4 years away... can't it be assumed that everyone on this thread has no clue and are all rambling in a bitter calamity of nonsense... as far as prophets... there have been some who's predictions were scary... and in a sense... right.

Don't count anyone out yet... no one knows who really knows.

Well actually it has always been 2012, 2000 was made up or somene miscalculated.
But the Mayans aren't the only people that hold on to the same year or even the same date.
Check out the Hopi Indians, same years, about the same date, and many of the same effects/reactions.
The Zulu's same thing, also 2012.

So I am going to say this to them:

Since the freaking dawn of time, there have been those who try to predict when the world is going to end, and this is just one of those. The Mayans had a calendar, and it was really different from ours in the way that it went for 144,000 days instead of just 365.

Imagine going out and buying a wall calendar, and flipping through each month. Well, when you get to December what happens? You are at the end of that calendar, but you know it isn't the end of time, you just have to go buy a new calendar. It's the same thing. The Mayan calendar stops counting days on what we call December 21, 2012, but all it means is to start all over again in January.

It's the same thing. It's not the end of the world, it is just time for the Mayans to get a new calendar.

Understood?

Am I wrong?

I was under the impression that the end date of 12/21/2012 was the last day of the last Baktun of the Mayan calendar. A Baktun was 144,000 days long.

I could be wrong about the exact number, but I guess I could have been sleeping that day in my Mayan Calendar 101 class. original.gif

Table of Long Count units

Days Long Count period Long Count period Approx solar years
1 = 1 K'in
20 = 20 K'in = 1 Winal 1/18th
360 = 18 Winal = 1 Tun 1
7,200 = 20 Tun = 1 K'atun 20
144,000 = 20 K'atun = 1 B'ak'tun 395

Okay, so basically we have a Baktun (B'ak'tun) that is 395 years long.

The way that they wrote dates was like this: Baktun.Katun.Tun.Winal.Kin.

QUOTE
Today, 09:49, Tuesday February 12, 2008 (UTC), in the Long Count is 12.19.15.1.6.

We are in the 6th Katun of the 1st Winal of the 15th Tun of the 19th katun of the 12th Baktun according to the Mayans.
Just like we are in the 9th hour of the 12th day of the 2nd month of the 2008th year.

Okay, so that being said, the way we know this is because early scientists used dates that were important to the Mayans (who used the Mayan calendar) and the Spanish Explorers (who used OUR calendar) to correlate days. Like, for example, let's say that there was a war that started on May 5th, 1520. We can see on the Mayan calendar that the Mayans wrote that the war happened on 9.12.8.6.6 (these are not accurate I am just making an example). So that way, the scientists can use that reference point to convert the rest of the Mayan calendar.

This method is not 100% for sure, because none of these scientists could accurately say what day some events happened, and also because our calendar is flawed as well (thats why we have leap years and stuff) but there are 3 conversion methods that are the most common, and one says that the beginning of this 4th world that we are in correlates to a date of August 13, 3114 BC.

It gets really tricky because our measurements were so tricky, but scientists have said that leaving room for extra minutes, longer days in the summer, leap years, etc, that one Baktun equals about 5126 years.

QUOTE
2012 and the Long Count

According to the Popol Vuh, a book compiling details of creation accounts known to the K'iche' Maya of the Colonial-era highlands, we are living in the fourth world.[7] The Popol Vuh describes the first three creations that the gods failed in making and the creation of the successful fourth world where men were placed. In the Maya Long Count, the previous creation ended at the start of a 13th b'ak'tun.

Okay, so according to this book they had, instead of just one world being created by a God, they had several Gods who they thought created the world, and that there were 3 worlds before that, and the Gods were not happy with them, and destroyed them. The world right before ours lasted until the date of 12.19.19.17.19 (which is around 5126 years from the creation) before the Gods destroyed it and started over. We are in the 4th world right now.

Using the method I talked about earlier, where they deciphered the Mayan calendar and converted it to our calendar, they were able to establish that according to the Mayans, this 4th world was created in 3114 BC.

QUOTE
The previous creation ended on a long count of 12.19.19.17.19. Another 12.19.19.17.19 will occur on December 20, 2012, followed by the start of the thirteenth b'ak'tun, 13.0.0.0.0, on December 21, 2012.[8]

When the Mayans made their calendar, they stopped at that year because the previous world ended there and they decided that was the cycle they wer going to use. Their calendar is around 5126 years long instead of just one.

So, just because the previous world ended at that date, some people think that this means that this 4th world will end on that date as well. Using the methods to convert the dates I mentioned above, the date happens on 12/21/2012.

You can check that yourself (remember we are just estimating here because I am only using years and not days) by adding up 3114 (years BC) and 2012 (years AD) and seeing that we get about 5126 years, the same amount of time that the last world ended.

So there it is. That's the Mayan calendar extremely simplified. There are other calendars they have that show predicted events that happen past the date of 12/21/2102, and nowhere in Mayan predictions do they even say that they believe the world will end again. They think that this is the perfect world, this fourth world, because this is the one that the Gods put mankind on, so they don't believe the Gods will destroy it. It is simply the last page of their cyclic calendar, and if they were still around, they would simply start recording time back at the beginning of the 1st baktun again.

Does this help anyone?

Well, it doesn't really matter what is going to happen in 2012, now does it?? Could be just like any other day, could be the end of the world. Either way, what can you going to do about it??
And your seriously asking the wrong question. because nobody KNOWS what is going to happen then. Anyone who claims they know needs to be punched in the face with the huge fist of reality, and have a nice cup of shut-the-hell-up.

it means we'll have various poles of magnetism instead of the two we have now which are the main reason why our winds act the way they do and the seas stay the way they are, and it's the reason why the moon's magnetism (if it was too close or too far) could cause Great tsunamis far greater than that of thailand (was it thailand 3 years ago? ) , a poleshift (scientific term for, "we're doomed") would literally cause Superquakes, megatsunamis, all volcanos to erupt or explode, and lots of more cranky things..

Wrong! Man alive, I'm worried about the state of our education if this is the sort of stuff people are learning.

The wind is caused by streams of air that circulate around the planet affected by such things as air pressure, heat from the ground, the salination of the ocean etc. Nothing to do with magnetism, at all.

The seas stay the way they are because thats the way they are. The tides are caused by the moon's gravity.

The moon deosn't have a magnetic field like that of earth's, and has no effect on anything on earth.

Magnetism does not cause tsunamis, volcanos or any of the above. A pole shift would not cause any sort of extinction or doomsday scenario. It just means north goes south etc, and the whole process takes about 5000 years.

Magnetism shields the earth from the sun's UV rays. That's it.

What scientist believed this? None that I know of.

Anyway there isn't any evidence that a metor/asteroid is going to HIT Earth either. There is one that is going to be coming close around that time, astronomically speaking, but it will be plenty of distance away to keep the Earth spinning on the same axle it has been on for a couple of years now...
