All American do not have guns. I know a lot of people and they surely don't have any nor with they ever would want one. If you have a gun you are asking for trouble.

They could be from anywhere, some sort of organization doing canvasing(knocking on doors and asking questions, distributing literature, things like that) in your neighborhood, political, or maybe seeking donations, or even a religious group. Could be some one doing a poll of the community. There are a lot of explanations for these people.

By the way, do your friend's parents work for any kind of government agency? That would be a good reason for going to D.C. and not being able to say why.
