Paranoid Android
I've been having problems booting up my computer in recent times. When I shut down my PC, everything shuts down right, and the computer turns off. But every single time I turn it on again, ScanDisk tells me that a drive wasn't shut down properly and needs to be checked for errors. It then gives me a few seconds to abort, before it starts scanning the drive. But no matter how long it scans for, it won't go above "0% complete". I've waited hours (gone down to the shops and back again) and still the ScanDisk is checking my harddrive, still at "0% complete". The only way to get to Windows is to turn the PC off and restart, then aborting ScanDisk before it starts to check the drive.

Any thoughts on how to solve this problem? All suggestions appreciated. Thanks muchly original.gif

try disc defragmentation, it might help.

What operating system are you using? Sounds like 98.

I would highly suggest backing up all your data. It sounds like your hard drive might be on it's last leg.

Assuming that it's Windows 98 try this...
While your PC is starting up tap the F8 key about once per second. That will give you startup uptions.
Choose command prompt only.
Type chkdsk and hit enter. Once that is complete then type scandisk and hit enter.

Restart the computer and defrag.

Hope that helps.

^I'm using XP. And I wouldn't be surprised if my harddrive was dying...... Thanks anyway.

My sister was having similar problems, and her harddrive was dying, she was able to save the info, but, it was close. I'd get a new one ASAP.

sounds like a bad drive, almost 100% sure on that. i would back up your stuff and get a new HD, save yourself the headache

Definitely your HD is bad. Scan disk can't check your files because your File allocation table is probably corrupt. Either get a new HD or reformat and reload your operating system.

From within Windows XP, go to 'My Computer', right-click on the "C:/" icon, select 'properties', then the 'tools' tab, then ''check for errors'. This runs the 32-bit protecte-mode version of Scandisk.

See how this progresses. If it passes, then your disk is probably OK.

This may even solve your bootup problem.
