I had just watched this documentary "visions of the future" and they project quite a scary future...

Robots gaining consiousness and being smarter then humans.

humans implanting chips to themselves to improve cognitive/ physical functions.

Humans extending their life and perhaps gaining immortality.

automated cars.

3d printer using nanotechnology( copying any 3d object )

total invisiblility( using nanotech again )

teleportation( scientists are already able to teleport photons )

Parents able to select specific genes to make the "perfect" designer babies...

and its not like somewhere in the distant future...many of this things will happen by the mid 21st century...

My personal opinion is that many of it will eventually happen though( since most of the technology already exists only in an early state )

I agree with all em, but these two would go hand in hand i'd say, one and the same thing almost...

Robots gaining consciousness and being smarter than humans. <--(some would argue tho; consciousness=soul)(?)

Humans extending their life and perhaps gaining immortality. <--(artificial organs & micro-chipped to the eyeballs)

''I Part Human Part Robot''.
Just a question of 'survival of the fittest err & smartest of the two in the end'. lol!

edit: Humans; (artificial organs, nanoteched & micro-chipped to the eyeballs)

Just came from Machines 'to match man by 2029 thread. lol!

Society will never allow computers to become self aware. We really just have no need for one. Computers are there to perform complex tasks that humans can't do quickly, they'll never be able to make command decisions as well as us, therefore no use.

I think humans will definetly become part machine. Hell i'd love some new bionic eyes please grin2.gif i however do not believe we will be implanting stuff into our brains to make us store more memory or think faster. We just straight out, do not know anywhere near enough about how the brain works to even think about doing stuff like that. Society is also very against change, otherwise steroids would be allowed in sport.

3d printers already exist original.gif using nano technology would be cool though.

Human teleportation is still a few centuries away. Big difference between a photon and DNA or an entire human body.

Designer babies already exist sorta :/

Don't bet on it Sardukar, big business will always look to cut costs...at any cost. Replacing machines over man will be no exception, hence the unemployment rate rising or rather sky rocketing with each passing year.

scientists are already in the process of trying to back-engineer the brain. So its just a matter of time that they will try to create a computer program to emulate the human brain.

Look at the predictions up to 2007.

I don't put much faith in any predictions of the future that are not very simple and very direct progressions from what we have now.

I had a dream vision last night seeing this was one of the last threads i posted in...

Too many of us are dying too soon, they wanna prolong human life (immortality) so they can suck us dry with taxes longer...

Ahh frigg'n Monday's...

Exactly my point. When Arthur C Clarke comes up with things so far off base, you know most predictions people make that aren't extremely short term and well informed are going to be BS.

I don't know. I guess we'll see what happens. The only thing i see happening is us landing on mars, Or the possibility of A.I. Those seem more likely. I'll only be 38, Or 39 then so it should prove interesting.

Ive seen your links, and the predictions were just wild imaginations by the authour. BUT, the predictions Ive put up are different. Its more feasible and also backed up by research. For example, scientists are already implanting chips to people's brains( with chronic depression ) to change their mood. So it isnt too hard to think that in the future they will put chips that can store memory...

It would be pointless to put in chips that store memory, since most evidence suggests that the capacity for memory storage is already nearly limitless. Although, it would make sense that we would find ways to increase memory recall and encoding so people will have a "better" memory, but not a "bigger" memory.

It's usually easy to predict what the future inventions will be, but it's another matter entirely to predict when then will happen. Most ground-breaking discoveries aren't brought about by a linear research process where the finish line can be measured by a certain number of years or dollars away. Important discoveries usually come from one person or group of people suddenly having one of those "of course, it's so simple" moments, or by accident. So, while research and development will bring us closer, we can only wait for some scientist working on artificial AI to hit his head getting out of the shower and have a great idea for the end result.

Just to bad most of us will be dead and the human race will be near extinct before we have a chance to realize our potential.... At least we had style.

I always have to laugh to myself when I hear about things such as "Invisibility through nano-technology".... I have no doubt that NanoTechnology will be perfected at some point. But to predict the future uses of it seems quite silly to me. At this point, Nano has replaced Magic as the way to only vaguely say something will happen...

I suspect the changes that the future holds will be subtle and we wont even consciously notice them like mobile technology has been, IMO the biggest thing to happen will come from Genetic Engineering, for example I heard that the double helix that makes up our DNA has markers on each end that detach with time so eventually the molecule or biological matter will decay and break down over time, however apparently a group of scientists have been researching this and they have formulated a plan to add markers or "cauterise" the ends of these unravelling DNA strands what in theory would prolong life for as long as you wanted/needed to.

I could not help but make correlations between AI and advancements made in modern war fare, for example there are UAV's and weapons systems that not only identify but also prioritise targets and attack without any human input, it's such a shame that these technologies are always initially developed to kill people, I'm a strong believer in Moore's Law and I can envisage a technical singularity but quite how an enlightened machine would think or rationalise is Alien to me, I suspect that you will not get any of the human emotions appear in a sentient machine as things important to humans like good deals at the supermarket or less tax would not be relevant to a "machine", the kicker is what actually constitutes as intelligent sentient life?

Nanotechnology is already here, there has been body armour designed for the future soldier that stops the blood flow gives pain meds and sets the bone/injury in a sterile cast and updates the forward command post of there survival probability.

Many commercial Airplanes take off and land without the pilots input, some engineers say the pilot is only there to eat his lunch, so I can imagine this technology (GPRS) being used on many future forms of transport but I suspect there will be a huge turn away from the Car and a more centralised mass public transport system.

The most disturbing prognosis for the future I heard that might actually happen is the possibility that humans might become more secular and live in large cities where so called Law and order can be enforced in greater effect, the downside would be that the vast tracts of land between these fortified cities would become lawless, fewer people would be willing to travel so most communication would be done electronically.

Teleportation is possible in theory but the only problem with breaking a human down to a genetic level and sending them in a stream of pure energy leaves the question is it the same person you reconstruct on the other end or is it literally a carbon copy, is it a human facsimile?

I guess we will just have to wait and see what the future holds original.gif

(Actually, the consciousness of humans is receding; we want to preserve the memory, preserve that that we will forget. If you have ever watched 'Star Trek,' there is an episode describing just that happening. A race of men had copied everything to a computer. The computer gained the ability to predict the population and plan wars.)

humans implanting chips to themselves to improve cognitive/ physical functions.
That is just a smaller version of the present with the implants, artificial this and that, the Jarvik hearts and all. But, they've got to be thinking about the viruses that are around, the H5N1 virus, HIV, SARS. Now I think they have come up with nanoantibacterium that they inject into the system and it seeks the bacteria and destroys it!

Humans extending their life and perhaps gaining immortality.
I say that is impossible to gain immortality because of the half-life of the atom and, of course, you can stay one step ahead of the process of dieing, but you can't stop it. But, let's say you can. Once humans gain immortality, they will have to ban sexual relations. Oh me! Anarchy for sure! But wait. . . They now have Cybersex!

automated cars
That goes with those robots up there that have gained consciousness.

3d printer using nanotechnology( copying any 3d object )
Yeah! Like the Replicator in Star Trek. Like Scotty, 'Scotch on the rocks.'

total invisiblility( using nanotech again )
There are two things that they think exist and are not seeable. The neutrino and the graviton. But total invisibility would involve opposing refraction and that I feel is only possible with total detachment of the object in question. If the object is you, you would have to worry about the total number of organs you have passing through any use of invisibbility fields or anything like that. You end up in the other world with half a foot and one eye. . . wait, that may be another explanation of birth defects!

teleportation( scientists are already able to teleport photons )
Look up in the sky at night. What you see is light from years ago. I really do not see how they could register the teleportation of a photon other than the speed of light.

Parents able to select specific genes to make the "perfect" designer babies...
I see lawsuits in the future. Deformed grown-ups.

Jonathan Oxer, arguably Australia's biggest geek, has a chip embedded in his arm so that he can open the door to his house without a key. The chip, picutured left, is about the size of grain of rice and is inserted with a syringe.
Meet Australia's geekiest geek

Some people are born with a chip on their shoulder, but Jonathan Oxer's chip is surgically embedded in his left arm.

The 37-year-old from Melbourne's outer-east never has to worry about forgetting his keys because the tiny chip, typically used to tag pets, opens his front door.

A swipe of his arm under a small scanner identifies Oxer with the house computer, which then unlocks the door.

But that's just the tip of the iceberg for Australia's biggest nerd, whose entire house is connected to a central processor and can be controlled remotely via a computer or mobile phone.

Teeming with technology, the abode conjures up images of The Jetsons but, much to the surprise of visitors, the house looks no less ordinary than a typical suburban dwelling. Wires, switches and gizmos are concealed, true to Oxer's philosophy of "having everything work invisibly".

A magnetic switch installed inside his letterbox detects when mail is inserted and occupants are notified via either the house computer, email or SMS. The garden irrigation system, too, is fully automated and computer-controlled.

Oxer's doorbell doesn't ring - instead, button presses are detected by the computer, which then activates a camera to stream video to TVs around the house showing who is at the door. If nobody is home, a picture message is sent to Oxer's mobile and he can choose to let the person in remotely.

Inside, curtains, doors, lights and windows are all wired up so they can be controlled electronically.

"You can go to bed and realise that you left the light on at the other end of the house and be able to turn it off without getting out of bed, using an interface on a mobile phone or using a telephone keypad," said Oxer.

"You can do things like issue a single command when you leave the house to tell it to go into lock mode and know that every single door is locked, all the curtains are closed and all the windows are closed, without checking them individually."

In the bathroom, lights and curtains are computer controlled and a keypad on the wall lets Oxer set the water temperature. Issuing the "shower" command turns all the lights on, closes the windows and curtains and sets the water temperature to 41C.

Oxer, who recently retired as head of the Linux Australia community group, holds down a full-time job as technical director of Internet Vision Technologies, which he formed in 2000.

He said the entire home automation project cost him "a couple of thousand dollars" because he did most of the work himself.
