This is a list of the best goriest movies that I have seen to date. Rated from least to most... Keep in mind that all these movies are real gore fests.
5: Reanimator
This movie aside from being original and one of my favorite movies of the genre has some pretty insane amounts of gore. There are 2 more sequels that also do not fail to disappoint either.
4: Day of the Dead (original)
This movie despite some bad reviews is actually really good, some pretty realistic zombie effects and death scenes as well like when a guy gets ripped in half after zombies bum rush the underground complex.
3: Dawn of the Dead (original)
Watching some of the bite scenes in this movie which are quite realistic makes you imagine what it must feel like. This movie while not the goriest does it well none the less, very intense and like a fine wine gets better with age.
2: Evil Dead 1&2
I decided to include both since the second was basically a remake of the first. From the pencil in the ankle in the first movie to the blood spraying out of the walls as if being sprayed from fire hoses these movies are some of the goriest ever.
1: Dead Alive
This is the goriest movie EVER and directed by Peter Jackson in 1992 may not be the best movie I have ever seen but the excessive amounts of death, gore and asskickery make it worth your while. Just the last half hour of the movie makes it worth while.
Ton of zombies+guy with lawnmower+zombie baby= Excessive fun
You may disagree with the other 4 picks but my #1 is truly that, if you haven't seen it I suggest you do it's a great addition to any movie collection.

I think the goriest scene ever was Hannibal, when Ray Liotta eats his own brains. That was just about as nasty as it can get.

The part in Cabin Fever when their about to get it on, he puts his hand down there and it is mush. I actually got light headed on that part and had to go into another room, along with some other parts that made me feel queasy. Although I don't really care for gore It never has that effect on me.
.... and zombies are awesome

Oh how I love me some zombies.
I'm trying to think of some movies that haven't been mentioned. So far all I can come up with is that Japanese film,
Audition and a few scenes from
The Last House on the Left.
I'll think of more later.

I checked Wikipedia in order to find out if Dead Alive was before or after Meet the Feebles...which I have seen (Dead Alive came after). This led me to glance at the Trivia section for Meet the Feebles, where I found this:
"Tech metal band Meshuggah cited Meet The Feebles as one of their sources of inspiration for their Destroy Erase Improve album in the booklet."
I have that album. I don't know if anyone else has heard Meshuggah or has seen Meet the Feebles...but, yeah, that made me laugh
As for gore, AG--as I know I stumbled off-topic--to me it's not so much the amount of gore but the quality of it that leaves an impression on me. I know "goriest" may seem to imply quantity, but films with an abundance of gore usually come off as cartoonish and lacking of substantial effect.
But then, I'm not really connoisseur of gory films

My gore usually comes from Flannery O'Connor running someone over with a tractor, like in The Displaced Person, or Poe driving an axe into someone's head, like in The Black Cat. You know, good old fashioned literary gore, where there's a plodding buildup and then a spectacular release.
I guess I gravitate toward films that emulate that. Oh well; to each his (or her) own.
...gore, that is.

For those who don't know Brain Dead = Dead Alive and Bad Taste was another gorefest made by Jackson. Although Bad Taste was no where near as awesome as Dead Alive/Brain Dead.

Cannibal Holocaust wasn't listed because let's face it this movie is absolutely horrible.

Dead Alive is the only movie on that list that really comes off as over the top and almost cartoonish. This however was intentionally done, Jackson has always made a good movie.
If I was going for mere quantity over quality alone I would have listed movies like Cannibal Holocaust for example which is just plain bad.

I love Dead Alive. The gore was bountiful and fantastic, and also unmatched by any movie released to date. Peter Jackson needs to go back to making movies like that. Or remake the LotR movies with ass-loads of gore.
The Unrated Land of the Dead was extremely gory (so is the Rated version).
The first Starship Troopers was pretty gory.
Saw's 3 and 4 were excellent in the gore department.
Zombi 2 has some very classic gore scenes.
Planet Terror definately didn't dissapoint, either.
I've still yet to see Cannibal Holocaust. I don't care how terrible the movie is. It's built up quite a reputation being banned countless times and that cannot be overlooked.

While this movie has to bee seen by the hardest core gorror movie fans I still don't place it amongst the greats however. I just wasn't a huge fan anyway.
Gore doesn't always make a movie for example the Nightmare on Elm Street films weren't known for excessive gore particularly but rather the creative ways in which people were messed up by Freddy.

Cannibal Holocaust had incredibly real gore. They cut a man's penis off, a guys head, various limbs, rape a woman with a stone, etc...

Another real violent movie is Blood sucking freaks, it's about this guy that does a torture show and it's pretty mean spirited. A women has her teeth pulled out and this teeth pulling goes on and on and on! it's really excrutiating to watch. then to top it off a drill is pushed into her head and they sucks her brains out through a straw. Two guys play darts on a women's butt, some guy gets killed by crazed women cannibals. A man gets murdered with an axe by a wife driven crazy. They play some kind of card game where they cut women's fingers off. This movie is seriously messed up.
The Prowler has some nasty deaths in it to, a women is pitchforked in the shower, in one long take a bayonet is slammed down through a man's skull and out the bottom of his chin while he convulses and his eyes roll up into his head and they turn white.

Atheist god you listed some great movies. I loved Re-animator did you see H.P. Lovecraft's From Beyond? If you didn't you need to see it! H.P. Lovecraft did some great stories like Re-animator and From Beyond. From Beyond is very gory but scary too. I also love The Thing it's my favorite film. Cannibal Holocaust is disgusting since they killed animals for the movie. Other movies are proof you don't have to slaughter turtles, monkeys and other creatures to make a film. So check out From Beyond if you already haven't it's got Ken Foree and Jeffrey Combs.

That would be Zombi 2. That's considered to be one of the most gruesome death scenes of all time. I like a lot of Lucio Fulci's work from what I've seen. I actually just bought and watched City of the Living Dead today. Can't say it was as good as I had heard it was. It pretty much followed the exact same formula as Zombi 2, except the final act of Zombi 2 is far more satisfying. The title is also very misleading. There are hardly any zombies in it at all. However, the movie does have some classic gore scenes. There's quite a bit of brain-ripping in this movie, and the scene where the woman pukes out all of her insides was pretty sick.

Good Point! That was gross...
My Favourite Gore Scenes:
Final Destination 3 (2 scenes): Ian is killed under the billboard and still manages to give the finger without the other half of his body, and Frankie gets killed by taking a still moving engine fan to the back of his head...
John Carpenter's The Thing: After one of the guys who was infected is beheaded, his head grows eyes and legs and walks around...
Feast:One of the characters is announced as "Hero" with a lifespan of "Pretty ****in' Good" then has his head bitten off...
Final Destination 2: (great scene!) Cat is sitting in her car, her legs stuck under a power pole and the Jaws Of Life, ironically set off the airbag and impales here head through a piece of metal stingthrough her seat. She drops her cigarette to ground (which is covered in gasoline), causing the van to explode, launching a barbwire fence through the air. The fence flys through the air, narrowly missing a cop and seemingly going right through another guy, before his arm falls off, followed by the rest of him.
These movies were kind of tame for this list but still, awesome job on the gore!

Gore doesn't affect me, at all. It's either so awesome that I like it, or so overdone that I laugh. The most-recent movie I saw that had some gore which I thought was funny was
The Ruins. The scene where Stacy cuts her hips open and starts digging around underneath her skin and muscles with her hands to find the vines and remove them was great, especially considering my friend's reaction. I like how after that scene, nobody wanted anymore popcorn, so I got it all for myself. Success!
