A pregnant woman accused of being a witch has given birth while hanging from a tree.

Nolan Yekum was strung up in a noose after being found guilty of sorcery in Papua New Guinea.

But she survived after struggling to free herself - all the while giving birth to a girl, who also lived.

Mrs Yekum and her husband Paul had been hauled from their home and hung from a tree by tribesmen suspecting them of witchcraft involvement in the death of a neighbour.

Mr Yekum said later: "We managed to loosen the noose to get our feet on the ground. We were able to free ourselves.

"My wife, who was about seven months pregnant, delivered the baby while struggling to free herself.

The woman and her baby girl, her third child, were doing well after two weeks in hiding.

If any villagers doubted that she was a witch before, they won't now.

That's just cruel, could you want to do that to an expecting mother, and her family.

Its easier to put blame on others. The people in question should be taking a good look at each other to work out who really did the dirty work.
Sounds like a nasty grudge or some one palming off something they did. hmm.gif

The poor woman was probably mixing a local concoction of a remedy for sore swollen feet from being pregnant.

Speechless.

I hope they live a good life in hiding. I'm glad that they're both okay including the baby girl.

So a regular doctor in her village wouldnt get hanged because he is practiceing medicine but the women doing herbel treatments gets hang..Maybe is just not to treat anyone and then let things go the way its suppose to. Let them die. Dumb society I say.

Well New Guinea is a third world country.. Of course it's a crappy society.

How well is she hiding if the media found her? and how did they manage to get away into hiding at all after freeing themselves from the nooses.. surely someone would have noticed they were alive and stopped them..perhaps finished the job. Just sayin.

pretty sad really, she is being hanged and aborting her feotus. its lucky that they survived without any complications. its still hard to believe that hangings for witchcraft are still happening in this day and age. but then again, there still are 'zombies' in some socities too. we cant forget its a different society and although we dont understand what they do, we cant begrudge then for something they believe in, just because its different

just because PNG is classed as a third world country does not give you the right to say an ignorant comment such as the one above... but i guess when you live in a country such as yours that doesnt teach anything about the world outside its own borders you will be ignorant of such things.

those people need to learn a few things about witches

I can,t imagine going through anything so horrific! I really hope the three of them get away and find a safe place to live!

It would seem they had jumped to conclusions about this, I'm surprised the superstition's still around.

You would think that common sense would kick in when your actually ABLE to string-up someone accused of witchcraft....but I guess I'm aiming too high.
