Keith Baar and his wife Barbara Miltner were walking near their home when their pet Milou was electrocuted.

Mr Baar, 37, said they had to watch the family pet, a 12-year-old husky/retriever cross, 65 pounds, suffer an agonising death, and claimed a child could have been killed by the fault.

A technical fault on the low voltage electricity network is thought to have resulted in the lamppost holding a live current.

“She was on her lead and we were standing beside her when it happened. When her husband tried to pick it up, he let go immediately because of a “tingling” sensation.

“When the crew opened the pathway up, the wires were smoking and they said the damage had probably occurred when the lane was repaved a year ago. Milou probably saved someone’s life but that doesn’t make it any easier.”

I doubt very much that damge had occured a year before. Surely they would have had trouble well before this happened if that were the case.

There was a news blurp several years ago where a child was electricuted due to similar circumstances.

What normally happens is that the metal post is not properly grounded. So if an energized wire comes loose or frayes inside the post and comes in contact with it, it also energized the post. If it is properly grounded, it would cause a direct short to ground and normally trip a breaker or fuse.

This also happened in New York, where a dog walked over the sidewalk grate, with the railway underneath and was electrocuted....
