im sure its been on here at least once - but i found the national geographic article about the amazing events getting ready to take place at Cern.
a few COOL pictures and fascinating stuff that really can get the imagination rolling.. its coming up in a couple months they're saying, so if you havnt heard of this yet- check out the article!- pretty amazing.
recreating conditions a billionth of a second after the big bang.

Makes me think of John Titor for some reason.

Seems like alot of effort to find a few particles.looks like an alien mothership or stargate.

It may seem like a lot but it is necessary to unlock the secrets of the universe and figure out how it all works.

i agree, those 'few' particles they are kindof looking for (or don't recognize) are the most important particles mankind has ever (not) known.

I've lost about .2 nanoseconds of sleep over this myself, but I'm still waiting breathlessly for LHC to come on line and kick some sub-atomic a**.

World's largest supercollider could destroy the universe

It has often occurred to me that the last word spoken on Earth will probably be by a scientist, and will probably be an expletive.

I once had a thread on another forum suggesting last words such as "Metres? I thought we were using Imperial -" or "Okay, the world's first working prototype - now to turn it on..."

I agree though, OS - nothing ventured, nothing gained. Just wish they'd hurry up with it!
Legatus Legionis
* to the thread starter * link does not work anymore.

Altough as I have read amongst the post above me, When the LHC goes online (hoping it does not malfunction) would be a great cause/contribution the the Particle Science branch.

I have read your topic and it seems possible to create a Mini black hole that does not decay as they expected it to be. IMO I hope they would do such kind of experiments with many unknowns far away from here. let's say the Pluto.

Well, we've been playing "God" with matter foir a very long time (atomic weapons etc). It really depends why you think this is a problem. "Playing God" with something like genetics has obvious moral issues, but particles??? I can't see the problem there. Personally I'm in awe that they can build a machine like this.

We've been 'playing god' ever since we started treating people for illnesses rather than let them die.

Im not eliminating the possibility of other theories, even if we consider the possibility of these theories as very small, some of them would be destructive to this planet... We only have one chance if it goes wrong so I dont see why the governments and scientists are so eager to take it. I guess theres too much money on this project already and the possible knowledge
this machine could give us can be too great to resist.

Yes but we are not saving people with the LHC, it could just kill alot of us insteed if something unexpected happens.

They usually use animals for their experiments first to study the outcome without putting human lives at risk, but with the LHC experiment... Were all involved! Whether you like it or not laugh.gif

We should take security precautions for every possible outcome but I guess this one's just too big. Im sure everything will proceed just fine with the experiment whistling2.gif
