Full Version: Why Current Ghost Shows SUCK!

Pretty much one word...Boring!

Lets face it, we all have knowledge on Ghosts and the Paranormal here so we as group can appreciate shows like TAPS ( and for some Most Haunted ) just for the scientific and research stand point. But think about it...how much of the general public really care about the research? That is why I am still shocked that TAPS is still running...granted there is a huge demographic for the supernatural, I believe everyone is curious...example: Britain and Most Haunted (which is proven fake but that was an old topic)...only the curious and those who have had a brief experience in the past is why these shows continue to run...

So here's a question, what would you rather have in a Paranormal show...

A 22min show on Research and EMF meter beeps?

Or

A show... while researching... scares the living SH*% out of you...with the odd EMF beep?

I don't know about you guys but I'm sick of seeing green lit faces in dark rooms... out of focus... and always... I said always... a knock, a door closing, or a loud bang OFF CAMERA!... never "fully captured" on camera... and then a green lit face yells "Oh my God!, did you hear that?" and panic ensues... if I'm not there, I do not care... I find myself saying that everytime!

But I gotta say I'm still gonna watch cause you know "just in case" something happens I wanna see it...but most of the time I'm left disappointed and off to another good night sleep...just once I would like a nightmare to follow...is that too much to ask? ... yes.gif

laugh.gif You are so funny!!!! My fav part is about the EMF meter! LOL. That is the same reason why I catch myself watching TAPS....just in case. The St. Augustine Lighthouse was the best evidence I ever saw! All other ghost shows suck....TAPS is the only one I watch....Are you going to the watch the new series March 9th? I heard they got really great evidence.

Well its not a light switch where you can turn ghosts on and off. I see your point of view and respect it but its called Ghost Hunters for a reason. It gives you the everyday outlook on any paranormal investigative group living their everyday lives and doing what they love to do. Its meant to show you how it really goes and its not directed toward the scare tactic. If it was directed toward the scare tactic it might as well be scripted.

I like most of the current ghosty shows. Paranormal State is my my new fav. although I still like to watch Most Haunted. It beats the crap out alot of the BS on TV nowadays. devil.gif

original.gif thx, I just saw St.Augustine, that was some good shadow footage they caught but I still prefer the Eastern State footage...TAPS is always good for something. As for March 9th, of course! Like I said I gotta watch "just in case" original.gif

No I know... that's my point... I love TAPS for the evidence and research material, they usually have some great footage... but the show never scares anyone, so if they could combine scaretactics with actual rare evidence footage, than I would enjoy it more... I think it needs more Point Of View shots to get the audience involved more, but than again TAPS is not the kinda show to do that. Oh and no show on the Paranormal shall be scripted... unless you're Scooby Doo... original.gif

Really? Personally I can not stand Paranormal State, I've seen about 4 episodes but the one that really urked me was the Trailer Home episode with the family and the upside down crosses and the father was all of a sudden possessed when everything was going slow and uneventfull... I'm sorry but I never watched it again... it really reminded me of the show Supernatural turned reality, but just a really bad version cause I actually enjoyed the "FIRST" season of Supernatural... ehhh, I'll let you know if I change my mind... grin2.gif

Me and you both...That dude with the crossed eyes makes me sick..

and what's the deal with him talking over that radio thing during the program? I suppose it supposed to make the show more intriguing...or something or another--

The show is irritating.

and before you fans of PA have a hissy fit----> IMO.

I do enjoy watching unknown actors in true stories of people that experienced the Paranormal. A Haunting is the one show that I never try to miss, and Creepy Canada is always great to watch.
I used to like Most Haunted then I seen the video(s) of Fielding whispering the sounds and kicking cupboards. After in seeing that, now, I do not like the new shows like Taps, The Girly Ghost Hunters, Paranormal State, etc..anything that has a somewhat big production company. Documentaries on Ghosts is always an good feeling to watch.
March 9 is not to be any different..but, I do admire in the way that they are really trying to find out the Truth- its not going to last though. imo

A Haunting

Discovery's The Haunting is the best out there from what I've seen so far-

I hate dramatizations. Don't know why but its just not the same. Piss poor actors mainly.
Shankpin
well it's better than dudes who think demons are after him (Paranormal state), and better than those getting possessed by spooks (most haunted- Derek)..
poor actors, don't The Haunting use the real folks a lot of the time?
Asphodel
I've seen a ton of episodes of A Haunting and they recycle the same actors for numerous episodes. I've only seen the real people give commentary, and they're often blacked out.
MasterPo
This goes around again and again and again.

For the most part the people on the shows (I think) are sincere in their invetigations. But you always have to remember these aren't National Geographic documenteries. At best they are pseudo-reality TV. IOW, the production companies behind the shows dictate how the show is done. At best the players may have a say but at the end of the day it's the production company's show, not theirs.

Ok you have a point! The trailer home episode erked me. The family came across as attention seeking if you ask me. everything was soooo fake. My 9 yr old could have done a better job. I still really like the show, but that particular episode was just terrible. I didnt buy it devil.gif

Agreed, all of the current ghost shows do suck. They dramatize everything, and.. well.. they are corny. Not to mention that guy "Brian" who is on every single ghost show I turn on. He's so obnoxious, childish, r******ed, and has 0 social skills. Then you have to watch these scrubs walk around with beeping equipment, eyes wide, saying "Oh my god did you hear that?" But of course, you hear nothing on camera, and see nothing on your television. All around, it's just a corny show, with bad acting (and yes, most of the time they are acting), and a poorly written drama script. Not to mention they are all some pretty weak-sauce investigators and photographers, when they hear a loud THUMP they run around and lose control of their cameras, instead of holding their ground and pointing it at the disturbance. I could never go urban exploring with these tools. AND when they "reveal" their findings to homeowners and landowners, they use the word "Debunk" every 10 seconds, I don't know about you guys, but I think it's a stupid word. Then they go on to explain how "they come in as skeptics and try to disprove everything", which they repeat, again, every 10 seconds. Dude we get it, we know, you are on TV almost every night, no one wants to hear you repeat yourself.

TAPS, and any other ghost-hunting show should be replaced by Law and Order

Is it 'The' Haunting or 'A' Haunting?

I like the A Haunting series. It's all based just on stories and they don't try to gather any proof... all in all still very interesting to hear people's stories.

Phase 3
Or how every single episode Steve or Grant have to explain what an EVP is. I do not know why but it annoys the crap out of me. I do not question there methods of Ghost Hunting, but I am starting to think the show may in fact be scripted. My reason for this is because of statement Jason said on Beyond Reality a while back "You see what Sci Fi wants you to see." If you watch the show starting from season one nothing was ever haunted, and I mean ever. Maybe 5 haunting’s in the first two seasons, than bam with the success of the show we are starting to see more and more "evidence" and now almost every house is haunted. Anyway that is my ranting of Ghost hunters.

G.H.I. was the worst one yet. Everyone in the cast drove me insane. Dona always had an eerie evil feeling, Shannon was to scared to do anything, Andy just has to talk and it annoys me, Brian always saw something, Barry always heard something and it got old quick. My favorite episode is when they claim to have a woman’s voice going shhhh, but when they played the audio it was clearly the hiss of background noise.

Paranormal State I watched one episode and hated it, I will never watch it again.

They need to bring back Unsolved Mysteries, I actually read something that they are going to bring it back with James Earl Jones as the host.

The show a Haunting is great, and I have a story about that. The day after my wife and I were married we headed off to Florida, my dad called me creeped out and said I am watching this show called a haunting and you'll never guess what. The story is of a newly wed couple named Bobby and Addie. And that happens to be our names, just weird because Addie is not a common name what so ever.

I remember that episode...

So... has anything paranormal happened to you and the wife yet?... now THAT would be strange grin2.gif

To the OP, I see what you're saying, but I watch them all anyway because I am hopelessly addicted and so curious about the subject. I keep hoping to see "something" Usually, I am let down.

So what would we paranormal enthusiasts like to see instead of the ol' run-of the-mill ghost shows?

I wish they could have something like "A Haunting" but the actual real live play-by-play, not just a dramatization. That would be the ultimate for me. You'd think, if true, someone would have caught some of this on tape - maybe a dramatization mixed with some actual footage would be a cool way to do a show, too. Anyone else have some suggestions for a new kind of ghost show?

I agree with everyones opinion on "A Haunting" but scripted stories on a particular families troubles with what always seems to be demonic poltergeist activity really bores the stink outta me... I'm sure most of us here have read ghost stories as kids or found a fascination with ghosts through movies and music (Phil Collins), but the more we are fascinated... the more proof we need to satisfy our hunger. Shows like "A Haunting"... Prove Nothing!... it could be Fiction or Non- Fiction, how are we supposed to know? Producers do cartwheels for these opportunities. And as for the acting... lets just say that scares me more than the story itself...

I agree with midnightangel with whom I've quoted... I know it is EXTREMELY rare to catch any physical hard evidence on camera to prove to the skeptics that there is no explaination behind the footage... you would need multiple cameras pointed on one person, location or object plus a santa sack full of luck to actually come up with something... so if that is pretty much the direction to start from, why hasn't anyone done it? Why are we focused on the reactions of amateur ghost hunters instead of their surroundings? (Most Haunted) Why are we interested in tales that may or may not have happened? (A Haunting) Why do we care if an EMF reading reaches 4.0... does this prove enough? (TAPS)...

I've been thinking... one of these days a Paranormal Show will give us the knowledge plus the footage to sustain our curious hunger, and in the process we will lose our lunch from the anticipation of what "thing" is gonna come at me from behind the closet door...

That... would be a Ghost Story I witnessed... That... would be a Ghost Story I remembered... and That... would be a HELL of a good show !...

Thank - You
