Full Version: Plant has stench of death, may prove popular

A tropical plant that smells of death is causing a bit of a stink, after blooming for the first time at a visitor attraction.

The Amorphophallus Konjac - better known as the Voodoo Lily - gives off a smell similar to rotting meat to attract flies to pollenate it.

Staff at the National Botanic Garden of Wales, in Carmarthenshire, hope the plant's strong aroma will entice curious visitors rather than putting them off.

The three-and-a-half foot high plant goes by many names, including Devil's Tongue and Elephant Yam, although Voodoo Lily is the most popular.

A native to warm subtropical to tropical eastern Asia, the plant was given a home in the garden just under a year ago.

Wow. Ive seen a few different plants on doco's like this, not as extravagant as the Voodoo Lily though.
Ive not actually heard of this one before, I reckon Its definantly a must see, or must smell. lol

My fav gardening show Burks Back Yard has shown episodes about these type of plants.

The flowers of some desert plants smell like rotting meat, too. They get pollinated by beetles.
Legatus Legionis
Is that the same as the Amorphophallus titanum( Titan Arum ) or sometimes known as the Corpse Flower?

This is fascinating........Association with flowers has always been a sweet, soft scent, so I was amazed that these beautiful flowers could give off an odor like they do........I particularly like the "Corpse Flower"...Legatus, if you read this, does the "corpse flower" give off the same scent as rotten meat, or is it different.......

Yes it does due to its fragrance, which is reminiscent of the smell of a decomposing mammal, the titan arum is also known as a carrion flower, the "Corpse flower", or "Corpse plant" (in Indonesian, "bunga bangkai" – bunga means flower, while bangkai means corpse or cadaver.) it is also said that during summer they turn into somewhat dark red with the same temperature as humans to give of that illusion of dead meat / carcass.

Does anyone else think that some of the plant pix that Legatus Legionis posted look a bit like an exaggeration of rotting meat? Maybe the flowers' appearances are supposed to match their smells?

I heard somewhere that orchids look like giant multicolored replicas of the genitalia of female wasps because the plant is meant to be fertilized by male wasps.

I pretty sure they make a jelly from this plant.

We have a Stapelia gigantea in our lab. This fall it had six blooms on it at one time. I was the first one in on Monday after the lab had been locked up over the weekend and let me tell you the smell made me sick!

It must've taken bunch of Air Freshener to cleanse the atmosphere of the room.
