STANHOPE -- A man professing to be Satan was arrested Sunday after he stopped his car, entered a Stanhope home and announced to the surprised family that he was the devil, police said Monday.
Brian P. Doyle, 24, of Columbia, was charged with driving under the influence of a controlled dangerous substance, two counts of aggravated assault on a police officer, resisting arrest and burglary, Stanhope police said.
Detective Ryan Hickman and Patrolman Robert Popelka responded to the Baker Place home just before 9 p.m. on the report of an intruder.
They determined that Doyle randomly chose the home, entered without permission and then said to the family that he was indeed the Prince of Darkness.
The family was startled but able to call police.
"They didn't know what was going to happen," Sgt. Charlie Zweigle said. "They didn't know what to do with him."
When asked by the responding officers to leave, Doyle resisted arrest and attacked the two policemen. Two additional police officers from neighboring Netcong were called for assistance and Doyle ended up fighting all four.
Zweigle said he still doesn't know what Doyle had taken to make him think he was Mephistopheles.
"We don't think alcohol," Zweigle said Monday. "They took him down to the hospital and drew blood. I can't even throw a guess out there to you because I don't know."
Hickman and Popelka were injured during the fight with minor scratches, cuts and abrasions, and were treated at the scene.
The four police officers were able to gain control over or the man claiming to be Lucifer, and lodged him in the Sussex County jail on $115,000 bail.
Police said they believe that Doyle was trying to get to a specific home, but not in the borough.
"We don't think in Stanhope," Zweigle said. "We think he was going somewhere but we don't think it was in Stanhope."
Doyle has a court appearance scheduled for St. Patrick's Day.
