Allen, Texas - (UPI) -- An Allen, Texas, man says an object found by his 8-year-old daughter has been confirmed to be a woolly mammoth tooth that's at least 8,000 years-old.

The foot long tooth was found by Allison Dodd while she was searching for fossils in Waters Creek at the Day Spring Nature Preserve with her mother and father supervising.

The family brought the mystery object to the Heard Natural Science Museum and Wildlife Sanctuary in McKinney, Texas. They showed their find to collections curator Roger Sanderson.

Dodd said Sanderson had the object confirmed as a mammoth tooth. The girl said she plans to keep the tooth, despite offers from collectors.

Why? You can not search for fossils?

You can't search for fossils in a Nature Preserve, well you can look for them but you can't disturb them.

This must have been very exciting for her! I remember a find i made at a very young age along the shore of the Fraser river in Vancouver. It was a rectangle shaped stone with what appeared to look like a carving of a native chief on it, with a very decoratively carved edges. I put it in the car, and continued to search finding many arrow heads. But when my dad and i went back to the car, i couldn't find the stone carving of the chief. I'm pretty sure my dad hid it, and later sold it! There was no other explanation as i was very careful to put it in a safe place, and he was the only one who knew about it! That area is very well known for it's rich Haida Nation herritage!
