Okay - this is getting weird. I have lived for 38 years now and never heard of this event. In the last two weeks, I have heard about it from no less than 5 different sources... is there a reason why everybody has started talking about it all of a sudden?

I believe the San Francisco Chronicle article got bounced around a couple accumulator sites like Digg and Fark.

I hope that's all it is - otherwise I may have to rethink my whole universe-view... ;-)

Wow never heard of this before. And just to clarify, the reason it was coming up alot for some people might be because of the dates. It seems like 49 years to the day passed last month.
Seeing the evidence, I would guess this is what happened just off the positioningand the disposition of the bodies:
-Something wakes them all and they flee the tents.
-They make the treeline down the hill and stop. It was probably pitch dark and whatever they were running from was probably still in or around their camp. So they stop, probably feeling that they had run far enough.
-They make a fire, probably waiting in the freezing cold for abit and decide that some will return to see if what chased them away in haste was still there. One of them goes up in a tree to watch. 3 of them set out for the camp again (Dyatlov, Zina Kolmogorova, and Rustem Slobodin). They are killed going towards the camp.
-2 more are killed behind them at the fire (Georgy Krivonischenko, and Yury Doroshenko) they had made at the treeline shortly afterwards as shown by them not running when they could obviously have seen what happend to the 3 who set out for camp (they were also it seems found in little clothing, like the 3 who set out for camp).
-The remaining 4 (Nicolas Thibeaux-Brignollel, Ludmila Dubinina, Alexander Zolotaryov, and Alexander Kolevatov) grab what pieces of clothing they can off the dead 2 at the campfire on the edge of the treeline and make a run for the woods. Wearing pieces of clothing from the dead makes it certain that these 4 were the last who survived and made a desperate run for it.
-They make it 75 meters away and are really set on by whatever was chasing them. These are the ones with the 'tanned' skin and the crushed ribs/tongue missing. Thy were probably trying to cross the ravine and make it across when whatever killed their friends did a number of them.
All in all, this is some seriously interesting stuff. Great find!!!!!
