So I was watching something on the history channel or whatnot a couple of weeks ago, and looked it back up on YouTube to watch it again. I apologize if this has been brought up before (I think I actually remember it), but I just wanted to see what you all think. It seems interesting enough.

Here's a link to the video:

I think it is just bugs as the japanese says

Rods are a videographic artifact based on the frame capture rate of the videocam versus the wingbeat frequency of the insects.

Essentially what you see is several wingbeat cycles of the insect on each frame of the video, creating the illusion of a "rod" with bulges along its length. The blurred body of the insect as it moves forward forms the "rod," and the oscillation of the wings up and down form the bulges. Anyone with a video camera can duplicate the effect, if you shoot enough footage of flying insects from the right distance.

QUOTE
The effect is especially pronounced with large, long-bodied insects that have broad wings and fairly slow wingbeats, such as mantises, grasshoppers, and katydids, or completely opaque wings such as moths.

I have been reading about rods for a few years and I think they're neat. I don't believe all of them are just bugs either. What they could be, I don't know though.

original.gif but if rods were to be something else, what else then

Interesting, but I have come to the conclusion after looking at a few pictures that they are insects indeed. You can see how those little things are flaping their wings tongue.gif

Two examples. I think that any insect expert should be able to recognize those patterns or even tell what type of insect it is.

Rods look the same in person as they do on tape. Some sort of insect.

Are there any reports of Rods in person? Being that they're a1) just insects, and 2) so fast moving that they're only properly visible frame by frame.

I've seen them and I think I read of another poster here that had seen one without aid.

So how did you personally distinguish it as specifically a rod, and not an insect?

I think they are insects. What I saw looked like just like some of the still frames above.
