does this just mean that if you find a laptop running at 2.0GHz...then it would be running it TWICE.. meaning the computer is 4.0GHz.. someone explain in lamens terms thanks.

Basically I understand it like this.

The processors complete the task at hand for you.

Old processor:
Say you have a canvas painting to paint by hand. It's like having only one brush to paint with. You eventually get the job done.

Duo Core:
Same painting but you are very talented and can now paint with both hands at the same time. You can't paint any faster with each hand but painting with two hands at once will get the job done faster.

Now add more memory to your computer and it's like being able to hold more paints on your pallet at once without having to constantly go back to the paint supply drawer (hard drive) to keep changing paints on your pallet.

Hope that's a good analogy for you. grin2.gif

Oh, good analogy!

And one more thing, let's assume the software is the canvas.
Some canvas doesn't like to be painted by more than 2 hands tongue.gif

so like if u see a computer that has a duo processor.. say its 1.84GHz.. so its really almost 3?

which would run wayy faster then an old school computer with a solo 1.84ghz?

I get confused about this too, lucid. I think it doesn't necessarily allow you to do it faster, but rather do a couple more things at once more efficiently.

Correct - it will process things faster than an old school PC... but it's not twice as fast. It comes in handy for rendering large graphics. I notice a difference with my music recording software.
It all comes down to how the operating system and individual programs assign the processing tasks. The software must be SMT software (simultanious multi-thread technology). Photoshop is SMS software for example.
