The Mask
I am sure that my computer is infected with a botnet. How do I detect the botnet and remove it?

A "botnet" is just a form of virus. Make sure you have an anti-virus program with an up-to-date pattern file; this will eliminate the problem.

Some viruses will disable popular anti-virus programs (or modify them) to 'stay alive'. Is your anti-virus program running ? Does it update OK ? If not, post here again.

The only problem about this botnet is the fact that it's from the neighbors living upstairs and since they constantly monitor me, I don't think I'll be able to stop the botnet. I think they're monitoring me right now. I swear, it's because of the bird calls that I have a phobia of birds.

I can't comment on your neighbours using telepathy to intrude on your thoughts, or wether tinfoil helps in this situation.

I CAN assure you that - provided your computer has a firewall and up-to-date anti virus program - you will be safe from viruses such as "botnets". (sometimes called "Zombies" or "Distributed attack network agents"). Tinfoil does NOT help in this situation.

actually a botnet virus is more of a malware program and may not be recognized by and anti virus program, try using a program called adaware made by lavasoft in conjunction with spybot search and destroy both of wich are free and one of them should clean it up for you.
dmurdock36
here are direct links to both programs good luck.

Adaware

Spybot

Botnets are VIRUSES and NOT Spyware. Search and Destroy/Adaware are NOT reliable tools for this sort of problem.

Anyway, the problem is moot as The Mask is just pulling our legs.

They are in fact Malware decendants of old back orifice worms, and I have been fighting these things now for quite some time and I have found no more effective tool to preventing and removing spyware and malware problems than Adaware and Spybot I have been using them for years to clean up computers and they work great. If you have a good antivirus and those two free programs and you run them at least once a week and keep them updated your computer will run like a charm, that is if you are running a Window XP machine, Defender in Vista actually works quite well, but if you are running XP I would highly recommend both products.

I agree.. I do the same thing.. i also use
http://www.ewido.net/en/onlinescan/ (scans the machine, plus fix)
and A-squared anti-malware (online scan and fix) just to be safe...

Are you talking about your wireless internet? If so, MAC filtering on your router is a good idea. So that, only your machine can access the router.
AVG Antivirus is a good program I use:

Be sure and update it. Also, a good firewall will prvent a lot of intrusions, I like ZoneAlarm:

It'll keep things from getting on your computer in the first place.
Try doing a search for the specific virus/bot/malware you have, and you should be able to find manual removal instructions, also.

A botnet is just a collection of computers doing autonomous tasks controlled by a remote computer, the software used to control devices that are part of a botnet can be considered a virus, a worm, a trojan horse or a common remote connection program etc.

Why do you think your computer is part of a botnet?
If you think your neighbours are doing something that requires a botnet, report them to the police.

Download a few tools to look for unwanted software (a-squared, an ant-virus, also check add/remove) disconnect from the internet and use them.

I agree, IF your neighbors are in fact "spying" on you, you should notify the local authorities. If they cant help you notify the F.B.I., what they are doing is a Federal crime and should be turned in immediately!

Yeah, but it's so prevalent. I have good luck in this type of instance with an old wireless router I don't use anymore. Plug it up, and let it throw its signal. No connection to be had...Drives 'em nuts.
I'm free to surf without the forced drops they need for reinitialization to write in my routing table. They also tend to get very angry and start jamming. In comes the FCC. A lot of fun around here...
