I believe that there are aliens, and that they just haven't shown themselves to us...well...publicly anyway...
I think that those UFOs that people see, really are UFOs and that they are alien scouts, spying on us, and waiting for the right time to make their presence known to the world. I believe that they want peace, but every time they try to talk to us, on the ground, not in UFOs, Area 51 captures them, and examines them, and probably interogates them, trying to find out why they are here, and what they want etc. But the times they have gotten to us, they probe us...probably looking for information on our species. But the reason they take so many people, is so they can figure out the different kinds of people there are. BUT! Although they want peace, and for us to be friends (That would be so friggin awesome xD "hey, my best friend is an alien!" xD) they won't, for many reasons.

Reason 1) Our species is greedy, and mostly thinks only for ourselves
Reason 2) Right now, we are full of genocide. Although you wouldn't originally think so, we are. Murder, rape, suicide, wars, cannibalism...if it continues...our race will cease to exist! Because, although we have a whole lot of people...a lot of them are dying...and pretty soon, all humans will cease to exist because of this genocide.
Reason 3) AREA 51! How can they trust all of us, if area 51 continues to capture them and examine them, and probably torture them (I mean...come on! Shots are bad enough...but if they are trying to actually EXAMINE a new species...*shudders*)
Reason 4) BUSH CONTINUES TO LIVE!!! xD jk
REAL Reason 4) If they are probin us...they are probably gonna find a lot of things that would scare them...like memories...or dreams...

For these reasons...I believe that aliens will not actually come and make their presence known to Earth for a long, long time...

UFOs are a worldwide phenomenon. Area 51 doesn't really have alot of jurisdiction in this case. I don't think it likely that every government in the world has decided to cover up everything, either.

If Aliens were visiting, I think we are only ready mentally for them as we can accept the fact they exist. But physically, we're far from ready to have them make contact. It would be ok for some, but others will panic, or decide that shooting, capturing, torturing, and dissecting might be better course of action. It's attitudes like that that would wreck everything. Not to mention the pandemonium for both species one act of stupidity could cause. The way the global community is now, something stupid would definitely happen somewhere that would cause great upheaval, so the aliens would be smart in not contacting us just yet.

i recon that they started visting earth thousands of years ago because there have been cave paintings of ufo's and i was watching this propgramme on the tv and there was this man from brazil i think and he said that an alien spoke to him in portuguese, so possibly the aliens kickstarted our languages so they have visited the earth and we have much proof of that now from ufo sightings caught on camera's and stuff but they know we're not ready posibly because of technology/politics/crime and i think we are ready

Yes I believe in extra terrestrial life but I don't believe in Aliens visiting earth or haunting humans as such. I beleive nature wouldn't allow it. Heck To go to even next galaxy (Andromed i guess), it will take you 2.5 million years at speed of light, is that possible even with advanced civilization + people surviving that long!!). I think not.

And most people perhaps forget that Earth is actually very Fragile. Look at Asian Tsunami: damn not even 5 mintues and 300,000 ppl dead.

I believe they don't want to reveal their presence because, if they have indeed been captured in the past, look at what our government has already proven that they are going to do if anymore were to show up. I don't believe "Aliens" actually come from outer space, for commonly stated reasons of how unlikely it is for a race to have traveled a considerable distance through space.

I believe however, that these "Aliens" originate from Earth. Theres an article on the front page of UM that mentions this line of thought. Its a far more likely and scientifically explainable for them to originate here.

As to why they haven't shown themselves to us? Quite simply, we'd start a war, and try to kill them, we may not have the technology to catch their ships and kill them right now, but if the governments around the world realize that a race lives on this planet with technology greater than ours (and therefore must in the minds of humans, have far more dangerous weapons to threaten us with), then the governments will put a lot of time and money into creating technology to "defend" ourselves from any potential threat, regardless of any peaceful intentions.

I believe the biggest reason aliens haven't publicly visited us is because we're the planetary equivelant of those places with nervous sheep and cousins that know cousins a little too well and people that say things like "You ain't from 'round here, is ya?" and "You sure got a purty mouth".

If they're real,they haven't made contact with us because we're too ignorant and violent as a race of beings.. They're smart for being secretive. I'm pretty sure they've studied a lot about us and our cultures. They probably understand that religion is a big part of most of our lives and for them showing up at this time would cause great chaos and confusion among the human race.

The answer, in my opinion, is quite simple. Think of the ramifications if extraterrestrials made their presence known to man so outrightly! People would want them killed, religious institutions would be in upheaval, people may start worshipping them as divine beings, and utter chaos would ensue. So, why aren't they just landing on the front lawn of the white house? They know what it would do to us if they did, and they're actually wise enough to not want us to all kill them and each other. But, think of events such as the Phoenix Lights, where thousands of people experienced unexplainable lights, had contact with e.t.s, etc. There ARE instances where e.t.s will expose themselves, if not for a very limited audience that won't cause global upheaval. The same can be said for religion as well. If the true divine being (whatever it may be) was to expose itself to everyone, think of what it would do to people! The fact is, extraterrestrials most likely do exist, but they just respect our prejudices enough to let US find THEM.

Maybe, (if aliens actually do exist) they haven't visited because at this moment in time, we are the most advanced civilisation in the universe. Maybe its us that has to go to them first?

If that's true, then how come aliens know about us, but we don't have the technology to find them? We're also a fairly young planet, and there are many other planets millions of years older than us. Thusly, there could be civilizations millions of years older than ours, which would mean they're far more mentally advanced than humans. If you look at our race, we really aren't very mentally mature. Sure, we can bring people back from the dead using medicine, but we still fight over things as unprovable as religion!

Many things I'm reading here are worth thinking about. I tend to agree with those who believe that aliens have a better understanding of our nature than we realize. They do not intend to bring harm to us or bring an upheaval. Perhaps they are as we have been, walking through the forest & coming upon a sight & want to see it better, but do not interact with it. Only look. We've done the same, traveled through space & not interacted with the enviornment there each time. We've been on the moon & interacted with the enviornment. Perhaps it's the same as we have done. Explored the area, sifted through the dirt, looked at rocks etc & left. But it didn't stop there. We've gone back into space & have continued viewing. What would we do if we came upon another civilization? Overtake it? Or just view it? Hopefully it wouldn't be as we're well known in our exploring of earth. Reach a new country & claim it regardless that there are others already there. If it is as the ancients have recorded in drawings, do they come back & ponder some of the things they may have inspired on earth? I've wondered if they view it as it would be viewed by us of a town we know that our ancestors helped build, but has dwindled or even become a ghost town? Just a thought.

The Russian claim to have seen them over ancient Viking sites I believe.
I know they were seen over the site of the Mexican pyramids.

Why aliens have not made their presence known is because there are no aliens out there to begin with. Shouldnt that be a logical conclusion. After all these years and there still shy? C'mon. You seriously cant believe that. All things considering, the simplest form of explanation is the logical one and most times its the truth. Ufos are for the most part Black-Ops testing or there could be time-traveling crafts by humans from the future seeing that a Particle-Accelerator is in the works this very instance. Good point about the chart. I'm wth you on that. A thought came to me that a general stereotype of aliens is that they are without emotions or feelings. Perhaps they do experience beyond the stereotype, perhaps even agonized or felt disappointment in what they view. Yet, perhaps, it's on the other end of the spectrum. They helped get us going as civilizations & are pleased with advances we have made. Something I was just thinking about is that since it seems like their interests have been in aiding civilizations, perhaps that points to them "bringing to the table" here on earth a sample of their society. Living in groups, civilizations??? Just thoughts.

I saw it at a range of 300-350 feet straight above me. It didn't even make a sound.
what confuses me about it though is that it wanted to be seen. It had 3 big lights at the corners, and a bigger light in the middle. These were more powerful than helicopter search lights, and lit up a lot of sky. The middle light blinded me for a good minute.

It seems if it was a US Craft it would not be so easy to see and so low to the ground.
It also seems that if it was alien there would have been F-16s all over the place and there was not. (the craft flew the same flight patterns that I Have seen chinooks F-15s F-16s and ospreys fly in, sort of North East off the coast of North Carolina at Emerald Isle.) Although, it was flying under radar... hmm...

So I don't know about that one.

Aliens may have visited Earth in the past or even now, but if they had or are, i dont think we would know anything about it. Someone on this thread has a signature that says something like :

"any civilization technologically advanced enough, will be indistinguishable from magic"

i think that hits the nail squarely on the head. I think we're so wound up with this mental image of little grey aliens, or silver suits and deeley-boppers that we would have a hard time recognising alien life if we fell over it !

My friend aliens are invisible creatures. Should an advanced alien civilisation discover us, why would they care to make contact, and if they would care, why would they risk altering the course of history for both races when just being a quiet observer would be the safer route? Are we so special as to be distinguished amongst the vast universe that is potentially and highly probably full of life or are we the first life-forms they've run across and thus they're apprehensive? Perhaps we're so different from them that they're puzzled what to make of us, or perhaps we're so alike to them, they're cautious because they know how we'll react. So many questions, and that's only the tip of the iceberg of questions that I have of 'why' alone, and that doesn't include 'if' 'how' 'when' and 'what'. Personally, I would think that we arouse some curiousity but aren't unique/important enough to deserve extra-special attention and treatment. If we are that unique and special, then hey, go us.

Or, if you like a good story/UFO/XCOM game, like myself, perhaps they've made more than contact, perhaps they've infiltrated every form of government there is! Now I'm going to go play some UFO Defense.

Putting the comical note of my last post in this thread aside, I think there are a couple of good reasons why we haven't been in contact with an alien race yet. First, like many others have said and and I insinuated earlier, we're simply not interesting and/or advanced enough to make it reasonable to make contact. Like it was said earlier, you don't explain yourself to a cockroach. While the gap between us and them may not be as great as that, we don't bother trying to communicate meaningfully with cows or lions, and a civilization equally advanced beyond us wouldn't bother trying to communicate with us. They may pop in once in a while to study us, see how we're doing, check our biology and technology, but until we've made a few more social and technological leaps, we're simply not on par.

Secondly, we have yet to set foot off our own planet, let alone outside our own solar system. Even our farthest ranging probes are just barely beyond the reaches of our solar system, and it's been determined recently that most of our non-focused radio and TV broadcasts dissipate into static long before they would reach another star. Waht's more, we're out in a spiral arm of the galaxy, pretty far away from the star-crowded central regions. You might think of us as being off the shipping lanes, so to speak. We're quiet, we keep to ourselves, and aside from any alien craft that just happens to be passing by our quiet little corner of the galaxy, no one's even going to notice us.

It seems almost foolish to me, with all the available concrete evidence, to assume that we're alone in the universe any more. Within a few years of knowing how to do it, we've discovered several hundreds of planets outside of our own solar system. While most of these are what we consider to be uninhabitable gas giants, we are refining our detection techniques all the time, and are steadily finding smaller and smaller planets, including a few lately that are small, rocky, and nearly earth sized. If planetary systems around stars are common enough for us to find so many of them so quickly, then looking at our own galaxy there must be many billions of planets. If you then look towards our local galactic cluster, the number of planets would range in the trillions, and this is still only in our small corner of a huge universe. The idea that life developed on our planet alone out of all those possibilities becomes almost impossible to believe.
