Matrixing is a term we use here at TAPS to describe the human mind's natural tendency to find familiar shapes in complex shapes or colors. In other words finding a face in the shapes and shadows of a collection of objects.

Ever sit back on the grass as a child and watch the clouds roll through the sky, pointing out the shapes of rabbits or dragons? How about the man in the moon? There isn't really the face of a man on the moon. It is the complex pattern of craters and ravines that causes our mind to form a face. This is matrixing.

Matrixing can be deceiving but if it were not for this ability we wouldn't be able to recognize each other. In fact it is due to the effects of matrixing that we are able to recognize varying types of fonts. If our minds weren't able to distinguish the subtle nuances of each letter then, we would only be able to read one font. Unfortunately, it is also matrixing which causes people to see skulls and faces in tree branches, mirrors, shiny furniture, cluttered closets, etc.

So, Matrixing exists and is a big problem in the paranormal investigation field. What, then, can we do about it? Here are a few ways to identify it and eliminate it before someone else does, and ends up ruining your credibility.

- First, look at the type of photograph you are analyzing. Pictures of trees, fields, cluttered up closets, mirrors and glass are a few of the prime candidates for matrixing issues. They include very complex shapes and patterns and, therefore, a high potential for the mind to construct a face or body out of something that isn't there.

- Second, look at the potential face or figure. If it is truly paranormal then, the face or figure would be made up of its own material, not the material that is comprising the picture. Let me explain; if the picture is of a forest, and your mind tells you that there is a face in it. Look to see if the face is made up of the branches and leaves from the trees in the picture, or if the face is separated from them and a completely separate material from the trees.

I agree.

Ever look up at clouds and see animals in the shapes? That's matrixing.

Ever drive fast down the road with the window open and swear you hear a voice or music? That's matrixing.

Absolutely and a very good point.. Matrixing isn't confined to our sense of sight. The human brain is incredibly good at filling in perceived gaps.. the wind can sound like voices, the movement of a shirt on your back may feel like someone touching you, vivid memories can trigger smells and tastes etc etc

Do a bit of research into the brain and how easily it can be fooled into seeing/hearing/smelling/tasting/feeling things which arn't there.. very interesting topic

Knowing how fallible our senses are is the first (very wise) step away from jumping to paranormal conclusions for initially unknown phenomenon..

The human mind doesn't like uncertanty or ambiguity. It would rather have a wrong answer than no answer at all.

Artists sometimes use this to their advantage in their work. For example, in the movie "Aliens" the whole alien segments where filmed with at most 6 guys in rubber suits. In the very begining they show you up close what an alien looks like and the rest of the time it's always dark and quick flashes of alien view. That's because your mind fills in the blanks so in a very real way you see the aliens slightly differently than someone else. (The studio wanted to save the bulk of the alien effects budget for the big battle at the end of the movie.)

You can also matrix smells. Your mind will try to take an unknown smell and label it as something your brain recognizes even if the smell is something you have never smelled before.

Matrixing seems to be the latest buzz word for any experience that used to be termed as a "trick of the mind" there are many types of deception that your mind can play on you, these can include simple misperceptions such as incomplete visual accuracy or entopic phenomena where cells within the structure of the eye break off and you may see irregular lines and shapes which you feel are external butare not there are plenty of other phenomena that define most of the common mispercieved events that can occur when people are in an increased state of anxiety or maybe during a ghost hunt.

so there you have it ; Matrixing (verb) definition = any event that you wish to define as psychic or supernatural, should also be referred to as mumbojumbo

Unfortunately no one can be told what matrixing is... you have to see it for yourself.

is that because it only exists within your own mind ????
Veliska
So is like seeing a mirage in a dessert a type of matrixing? Wow, I did not know about this, so it is not only visual. It follows with your senses as well....very interesting. So Illusions is matrixing as well?? Like an Illsionist, is actually matrixing your mind?

A good example of matrixing is happening on a thread on this site, some people clearly see dragons while others find it difficult to locate any resemblance of a dragon

Nice picturs of some clouds in the sky though.

I actually wasn't 100% confident on the term myself until I saw the Myrtle Plantation TAPS episode.
