The only program I have for making pictures on my computer is paint. I was wondering how much other programs cost. I'd like to put some pictures on websites like deviant art and photobucket but I can't even draw something then scan it because I don't have the program for the scanner/printer. Does anyone know how much programs for scanner or printers cost? I know on photobucket you can edit the pictures but is there anything else like that on another site? One more question, is it possible to actually make something of pretty good quality on paint?

Just go to youtube and type 'paint tuts' there are lots of talented people out there using that basic but powerful computer graphics tool.

If you could, try a distribution of Linux. I'd recommend Ubuntu, as that's what I use, but PCLinux is good, also, as far as novice use. The program I am getting to is GIMP.

Here's some links:

http://www.gimp.org/

and, if you have a slow connection, for a nominal fee you can order CD/DVD's:

http://distrowatch.com/
lists CD re-sellers.

GIMP, which is GNU Image Manipulation Program, is a free open-source program. Very, very complex. I mess around with it, and it's extremely complicated, but straight forward. Tons of effects. And, can save in a number of file formats. It'll save you a bundle for a graphics option. And, if you have difficulty with your hardware running a Linux distribution as far as printing, just operate form a live CD, save to USB drive, then save as Windows compatible format and transfer to print. It should do what you want.

*** OK, just checked and they have a Windows version:
