this may have been encouraged by beached whales or killer whales when then go on land to hunt seals, they speed up on the land, hop around to get the seal then hop back in the sea.

Yes it is true, land whales exist. If you go to Ashville North Carolina you just may catch a glimpse of my mother in law flopping and floundering her way down the street.

Hey undead,

Perhaps you could write us one of your excellent stories about this particular incident. I bet it would be your scariest yet.
Wasn't the thing in Ice Hunt a prehistoric ancestor of a whale?

Dude, you are do not have the right to end a thread unless it is breaking the rules of conduct. If you don't like the thread ignore it till it goes off the main page.
It is a fact that there used to be creatures that were the ancestors of whales. They just found the fossils of another one here in the Northwest US.
I think unless the land whale was shrunk down to the size of a seal it would have been found by now, if not by actual people, then by satalite or airplane.

People should be able to post their thoughts without someone saying, "Close the thread."
Did anyone do a search for this Ice Station Grendal? Are we sure it did not exist? Probably there was no land whale, but what if this is based on a true story that instead had a walrus or elephant seal as the creature?
A quick google search shows that most likely it is only a book, but maybe someone who has good Kung Fu could find something more.

I am pretty sure it is not based after a true story, as there are plenty of other impossibilities in the book.
Here is a book review

For most of his books (or at least what I heard, I haven't read them all) he does, but this one was kind of lacking in that aspect. The "land whale" did exist at one point in time however, as whales and dolphins (or at least their ancestors) started out on land.

The following two animals are eye-openers in this case:
1)
Pakicetus (The first known cetacean that existed in the Eocene epoch in Pakistan)
2)
Ambulocetus (Also known as the "Walking Whale," existed in the Eocene epoch in Pakistan)

Doubt they live on today, but there are the Australian bunyips and from NZ i caught a story about a swimming dog in the nearby river which was very dangerous and highly resembled an early semi-aquatic cetacen.

What exactly is a bunyip anyway? Ive heard that theres a number of different explanations

Its like a seal or a walrus that lives in Australian lakes and rivers.
