Miss Surrey becomes an international inspiration

Chloe Marshall will now compete in the Miss England final

CHLOE Marshall, the plus-size teenager crowned Miss Surrey for 2008, has revealed she took part in the pageant because she was “sick of size-zero girls”.

“I entered to prove to other girls that big is beautiful and also you do not have to starve yourself to fit in,” she said.

“It feels great, I cannot believe it. I am really happy I can put a positive message out there as I am sick of seeing size-zero girls all over magazines.

“I proved that curvy girls can be in a beauty pageant and from now on maybe more healthy, positive people will enter.

“My family and friends are really proud of me for doing something not for myself but for other people. They are really supportive.”

Worldwide interest

The trainee beautician, from Cranleigh, has become the first size 16 girl to reach the final of Miss England.

She trounced nine other young females, the majority of whom were trim and blonde, to scoop the regional prize.

And news of Miss Marshall’s victory has spread across the globe like wildfire.

Daily papers in India, Malaysia, America, Australia and Switzerland have all featured stories on the 16-year-old scooping the county crown.

Miss Marshall, who is single, has also been snapped up by the Models Plus agency, and has been posing at fashion shoots in London where her 5ft 10in, 12 stone eight pound, and size DD cup figure has been in huge demand.

The Miss England final will take place in London in July.

I think she's looks fantastic original.gif

Having said that - for me, looks are secondary to personality. If you're with someone just because of the way they look, then it's going to be a short(ish) term relationship.

Beauty fades. Figures change. Personality is forever.

She most certainly isn't obese. I get sick of all those extremely bony girls that starve themselves. I will say this about her though she is very beautiful.
bogcreeper
Good for her! This is coming from a guy with a degree in physical education and health. She is beautiful! Yes she does have meat on her bones, but so do almost all of the "normal" sized girls out there. Women need to stop fixating on being dental floss thin. That is not normal and in my opinion is not perty. This girl looks healthy, seems healthy and I bet if you asked her she feels healthy. Yes too many bon bons is very bad for your health, but if you stay active and eat healthy, girls you will stay pertyful and even more important you will be healthy.

Agreed huba huba

I will admit when I was younger and much more foolish I would always go for the tiniy little figures and care little about who they were, thank goodness I grew up.
MoonPrincess
She looks fine. I mean you don't have to be skiny to be a model or anything like that. I'm glad that it's not getting to her.

does she not remind you a little of Liv Tylers sister? She is a plus size model.

She's a bit chunky for my liking. I prefer an athletic, healthy build. But that's just me. wink2.gif

If an athletic build correlates with health then 80 percent of females out there are ready to kick the bucket. I as well as most men also prefer athletic builds which do have better chances at being healthy through childbirth, not that your concious cares, but a lot of "normal" women and girls are getting sick in the head comparing themselves to supermodels. Lets put it this way, if guys had to walk around naked from the waist down I do bet that a lot of men would never leave the house. Comparisons are sometimes portals to hell. I have done some personal training and helped women with weight management in the past and can say that a few of them especially my little molly(I say little because she was 83 pounds on a 5 foot 6 frame) needed mental help that I was and am not capable of giving. Listen to me blah, blah, blah, sometimes caring sucks!!

As long as the women look healthy, who cares what their weight is? It is the walking skeletons who are the ones who need help.

Nobody said most models builds are healthy and I certainly wouldn't consider such as a healthy, active look in most cases. Miss Surrey is certainly not very active though. And I don't find that attractive either. That's all I'm saying. As for your 80% number? They aren't ready to kick the bucket but they are far more likely to suffer from debilitating conditions that will require more healthcare than if they regularly exercised. I'm a highly active guy and I happen to be attracted to women who share that view. Nobody's build is exactly the same and no matter how active a woman is some will always be big in the hips, be thicker in some areas than others, that's just natural. I don't see it as anymore beneficial to promote a view that having arm fat that sticks out past your elbows is any more healthy than being overly thin. Being healthy weight for your build is what should be promoted.

Okay yes, that is just downright scarey! I wonder if that woman feels she looks good? Interesting.

I posted this becasue I think Miss Surrey is gorgeous and NOT obese, IMO. I was curious to see what others thought. I cannot believe the media attention this has gotten. I find that so strange.

Anyway, thanks for your replies!!

Obese? please. There is not a damn thing wrong with her.. especially not obese forgodsakes..
when.i.am.queen.
I mean, you can tell that she is not obese from just a few things.

The first, take a look at her skin - it is glowing. There is no way if she was an unhealthy weight that her outwards appearance would be that good. And yes, while I know that she is wearing a bit (read tonne) of makeup, that kind of complexion you would have a hard time faking.

Secondly, again take a look at her her. It is healthy, shiny, pantiene - worthy hair. Again, you can only get this type of sheen from being physically healthy. Which she is.

Also, I think that the above photo is a fake. I can remember reading it somewhere, about photoshopping or such?

I've lived my entire life slightly chubby (by Hollywood standards). At the age of 55 I have none of the degenerative disorders (nor extremely negative signs of aging) that plague many others. Very interesting article. However, if I had a BMI of 30 I'd be a bit concerned. The muscle to fat ratio has to be considered, as only height to weight ratio isn't all that accurate. I'm a fairly big girl (5' 8" 146 lbs) but because I weight lift my BMI is only 22.5. Fitness is more than just one's weight per say...it's what the weight consists of.

She's sending the message that it's okay to not be a size zero stick figure, it's okay to look normal - and that's precisely the message that young people need to hear.
Asphodel
I think she looks pudgy but good. She definitely looks better than the stick thin models. I'm happy for her.
But, though I think that thin models look sickly, I don't think anything good will ever come from praising those on the opposite side of the scale. I think it encourages overweight girls, and I am flat out sick of them. They ruin shopping for me. Small sizes disappear and average sizes become larger as women fatten. Because of sedentary gluttons, I can't fit into anything! Sadly, I can't afford a tailor. no.gif
Some people are naturally "thin". You know, normal. They have curves and flesh, but aren't pudgy. I'm one of those individuals, and we don't deserve to be bashed for looking normal. Complain about skin and bones girls all you want. But, to be fair, complain about fat chicks too. They're no better.

I'm not sure where you live, but small sizes can easily be found in the Juniors Department of most stores (at least where I live in the NE USA). Exactly how "overweight girls" "ruin shopping" for you kind of confuses me. Where I live the Plus Size Department has nothing to do with other sizes a store carries. BTW, exactly what do you consider "overweight"? I mean, would it be from a health perspective, or from a fashion perspective?

As for the "sedentary glutton" issue; today I walked/jogged apx. 2 to 3 miles with my dogs, then I weight trained for about 1.5 hours at the gym. My last check up included a tread mill cardio test (due to my age), I scored in the top 5% for my age. My blood pressure/glucose/cholesterol etc. was also at optimal levels. All this from an old fat chick....go figure.

I don't think anyone is "bashing" slim women, but perhaps some of us heavier gals are "normal" as well (?).

Of course we have juniors departments, but I was talking more along the lines of normal sizes at various retail chains like Old Navy, Gap, etc. It does sound silly, but sizing guidelines do seem a bit off to me. Smalls look and fit the way mediums used to at some places. Often I can't find xxsmalls anymore, but I can definitely find xxlarges. Its maddening because I already have enough trouble with height. I don't need everything else fitting awkwardly. There are very severe size inconsistencies.

I mean "overweight" from a health perspective. I certainly don't judge people from a fashion perspective. Anyone can look good in what they wear.

In my opinion, you don't look like an "old fat chick". You look good. I was primarily making a statement about the young overly heavy girls who are becoming the statistical norm, and IMO are irritatingly changing everyones standards.

From my perspective people do "bash" slim women. I am 4'11 and 106 pounds, making me just right for my height and build. Many people in Kansas City are either overweight or obese, and I have gotten rude comments. I can't tell you how many times I've been questioned for being "tiny" as if I am doing something wrong. Its rude for them to ask me if I eat, especially since I look healthy. People make it seem like its a sin to wear size 2 jeans and extra small shirts. You don't have to be thin and bony to wear those sizes. I'm perfectly proportioned, just sized down. Smaller sizes aren't bad like people believe. For some people its normal, just as a size 8 is healthy and normal for others. A size 16 isn't particularly healthy for a teenage girl though, regardless of fashion.

I know I am a stereotyping ass, I'll admit it. Sorry if I offended you.

Edit: Reading up on "vanity sizing" now. Interesting.

Let's be honest......In the superficial world of modelling, she is definitely 'heavy' but in our regular world she's definitely normal that's for sure.....I'd kill for her boobs, I hardly fill a B cup size, especially after 5 pregnancies.... disgust.gif

Plus she has a gorgeous face, IMO...... thumbsup.gif
ShaunZero
I'd tap that. On a serious note: I like girls who are atheltic to a bit thick. I don't like girls who are too thick or too skinny, and in my opinion as long as you aren't ACTUALLY "fat" or "obese", you shouldn't worry. This woman looks good, and though she's not fat nor obese, she doesn't need to gain any weight.

PS. Nice rack! -runs away-

I get you Asphodel, I lost about 5 kilos/10 pounds once (nothing exciting just started walking to work) and since I am small too -5.2 that makes a big difference. I got so many b****y comments it actually made me cry once!

I actually prefer having those 5 kilos back (they give me my curves god-damn-it!!!) but it did make be appreciate that slimmer chicks can have a bit of a rough time too.

I generally don't make comments about peoples appearance/weight whatever as you don't know who is sensitive about what.

Some remarks can truly be hurtful. I'm glad someone can relate.
This is my typical weight, and as such I have curves. I wouldn't if I lost 10lbs, though. If I get teased now, I can't imagine how bad I'd suffer then. ohmy.gif

I was overweight very briefly due to a bad medication in my early teens, so I understand those sorts of hurtful comments as well. I try not to make them. Luckily for me, all the weight dropped off of me as soon as I stopped the medication.

Ok, I understand where you're coming from now and completely sympathsize with you. At 4' 11" 106 lbs you are simply a healthy petite woman. A good general 'rule of thumb' for calculating a healthy weight for a medium framed woman is to start with about 105 to 110 lbs at 5' tall and add apx. five lbs for every inch above that. If you do this you'll see that the weights for fashion models are far, far below the norm. You'll also see that unless a gal is quite a bit over 6' feet tall she shouldn't be weighing 200 lbs either! Extremes are rarely healthy, which is why I asked what standard you were using for determining "overweight".

BTW, my 22 year old daughter is even taller than I am (she's 5' 10"). She wears an 8 tall in jeans (try finding that size!). She also wears a 10 in a shoe. People often tease her about her size (even at 5' 8.5" I get 'Amazon' comments). Many people are cruel (and probably a bit jealous) try not to let it bother you...just fire back at 'em "Good things come in small packages".

Also, I'm rarely offended by people who hold differing opinions from myself...especially if they have good reasons for their opinions. original.gif
