Just saw an ad on the TV for Five's "Extraordinary People" series (UK) about a man "who grew roots from his hands and feet."

Looked it up, it's called Cutaneous horns. It's a skin tumour, rough and wooden or horn like. They don't usually get as bad as the guy who will be in next weeks episode...
