Click to view attachmentKnut, the once-cute celebrity polar bear turned vicious killer, is at the center of a controversy over his brutal slaughter of ten carp at the Berlin Zoo. The massive polar bear, who has lived at the zoo since birth, apparantly fished the carp out of the moat surrounding him and ripped them to shreds in front of several disgusted zoo patrons.
One of Germany's top newspapers, Bild, ran the headline "Knut Embroiled in Carp Scandal", and featured an article which quoted animal rights groups who criticzed zoo officials for placing live animals within Knut's reach.
It seems that Knut, the pyschopathic killer that he is, eventually chowed down on the fish, but according to the BBC, "There is speculation that hand-reared Knut killed the carp just for fun". One German newspaper reported that Knut "senselessly murdered the carp" before leaving their remains.
I think Tyler Cowen says it best. "Ummm....HE'S A POLAR BEAR".

To me, he was doing what his natural instinct told him...Maybe it's time to release him to his natural enviornment....

He doesn't know any better though because he's just testing the waters of what is food and what isn't. Hardly a sadistic killer for wanting more food to eat.
Plus, it's only carp. Not like they put an endangered fish in with the bear to eat.

I agree Kratos, but what worries me is that they have this poor bear labeled, and I'm hoping the zoo doesn't do anything stupid...Although I'm sure the activists would step in, or at least I hope so....

ive read several reports before about that bear, he grew up with tons and tons of attention from crowds when he was a cub,but now that he is bigger and not as cute he dosnt get near the attention..zoo keepers say he throws fits to get attention..so this story could be a follow up of what the bear is doing to keep peoples atention on him.

animals. I hope they don't destroy the bear for eating a bunch of fish.

Good grief! Don't those people know you can't completely tame a wild animal, and that it still has it's natural instincts? Of course a bear would go after fish if they were available.

They are clearly overreacting.
1. It's a polar bear, an animal.
2. It's only a carp...
No need to consider the bear a "mass killer"

This has got to be the most rediculous story on the internet,
IT'S A POLART BEAR! That's it's nature "to kill".
It killed 10 carp for fun, because that's it's nature.
Bear=Carnivore=Killer of other animals.
Duh.. That's what carnivores like to do,
it's exciting for them to kill other animals.
The only people who find this shocking
are the morons that like to think cuddly polar
bears actually eat tea and scones LOL
It's a bear! That's what it does "Kill"!

I think the zoo's only concern right now is that the polar bear has lost its lovable image and wont attract so many visitors thus losing them money .
Stupid people its a polar bear what do they expect him to do .

The burning question for me is: Since when is a wild carnivore killing it's natural prey a form of "murder"? Utilizing this "logic" do lions "murder" zebra?

Now it looked like they where trying to imply that he killed the fish for fun.. animals kill to eat, humans kill for recreation, or so they say. Though my cat doesn't eat every shrew she kills.. maybe shes a murderer too! At the end it did say he ate the fish.. wow, conflicting story.

thats true,if the bear killed the fish to get attention or to get a reaction from the crowd of people watching its not a natural behavior its learned from having so much attention when it was cub....not the end of the world earth shattering news but it is interesting

Of all people, I would think you would know better Kratos.
There are new programs, sponsored by "The Church", that are designed to cure bears like Knute of their sinful nature and "killing of innocents". And if that fails, there is always gene therapy. Nature or nurture, we've got it covered.

I think more zoos should have 'interactive' exhibits like this. Let the polar bear kill the carp. Put penguins and seals in there too. (Okay, maybe not cute little seals) I wanna see lions stalking gazelles and stuff like that.
Now THAT would be a good zoo.

Oh, wicked, bad, naughty, evil Knut! She is a bad person and must pay the penalty! And here in Castle Anthrax, we have but one punishment for setting alight the carp-shaped beacon...

What do they expect they guy to do, order out? Who is stupid enough to put fish in the same spot as a polar BEAR and then complain when he eats them? Have they never seen National Geographic? Are they getting all of their bear study information from old reruns of Winnie the Pooh?
