What is a "comet planet"?

No, I don't think it can happen. You're talking about Comet "Lee" (1999/H1), which won't be around again in the life time of anyone on this planet currently...nor in the next 30 to 40,000 generations...let alone in 2012.

The "prophecies" regarding this very long period comet arose from something called the Millenium Group (a name which, since the 1996-1999 TV show "Millennium", has become a somewhat catchy for alot of organizations).

This particular "Millennium Group" appears to be a bunch of pseudo-scientists who not only watched a pretty darn good TV series, but took it far too seriously, and thus create lots of doom and gloom theories about things they can't substantiate.

Comet 1999/H1 is gone...forever, as far as anyone on Earth is concerned.

I wonder how many people will file for bankrupcy on December 22nd, 2012. Perhaps we won't see a spike in bankrupcy filings until January 1st, 2013. I'm laughing so hard, right now.

Stop believing in nonsense.

I agree, why predict destruction on 2012? Why not world peace or solving world hunger.

if your curious about it, look on the following links...
http://www.satansrapture.com/nostra2012.htm
http://www.exitmundi.nl/exitmundi.htm
look for planet x on the last one
the human race itself wont end but heres a link to the picture of it
http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/ap990427.html
it does say that it aproaches the inner solar system
Waspie_Dwarf
Dr alien, you really do not have even a basic understanding of astronomy do you? (If you did you wouldn't fall for this sort of nonsense).

The first two links you provided are just unscientific, superstitious mumbo-jumbo. They really have no place in the science forum.

The third link is a nice picture of a small comet. It provoked the sort of "the end is near" nonsense you are promoting in 1999. It had just as much basis in reality as Comet Lee passed harmlessly through the inner solar system and back out into deep space where it will never trouble us again.

Dozens of comets are passing through the inner solars system at any given time. There is a tiny risk that one may hit, but there is no such thing as a comet planet and there is no known object on a collision course with Earth in 2012.

On what. You have just posted drivel.

You clearly do not have a clue about the subject. I have been studying astronomy and spaceflight for more than 30 years, I do not claim to be any kind of expert but I can spot someone that doesn't have a clue about the subject from a mile off.

Telling me to do some research is a bit rich coming from somone that I have just had to educate on something as basic as the difference between sound and radio waves.

Yes and soon it will come to a grinding halt. And besides if astronomers have found out that this so called PLANET X is heading to Earth they would have made preparations to diminish this threat and have the made any preparations, the answer is simply 'NO' they have not. This posting on YOU TUBE is a bunch of computer generated nonsense.Grate Scott I can not believe that some people take this as credible evidence. sleep.gif

In order for it to be a good argument, both sides should at LEAST have a well thought-out point with some facts to back it up.

This is more like a schooling.
The Silver Thong
If planet x or aka Nibiru were to exsist then we would know about it 100% If Nibiru were going to hit Earth in say 4 years it would be close enough to detect easily. This planet is said to be on the scale of Jupiter or Neptune in size. That is huge and we would have seen it years ago if it was a real planet. I would listen to Waspie, he's a pretty smart feller thumbsup.gif

Dr Alien.Just so you know, if something is larger than a comet than it is called a planetoid not this comet planet that you are talking about and another thing comets barely have gravity. How long for you to realize that there is no planet X heading our way.

Firstly Nostradmus is so vague that his "predictions" have been claimed to mean different things at different times. I'm old enough to remember when people like you were confidently claiming that Nostradmus was proof that the World would end in 1999. It seems to still be here. The anti-Christ predicted by Nostradamus was, at various times, claimed to be Napoleon, Hitler, Gorbechev and now I have even seen it claimed that it is George Bush. The only thing that you can prove with Nostradamus is that there is one born every minute.

Secondly this is the science forum. It is not the place for non-science subjects like Nostradamus. There are plenty of other places on this site where you can discuss Nostradamus until your heart is content. You have failed to to provide a single scientific fact to support the ludicrous claims you are peddling, in fact you have not shown any evidence of even understanding what science and the scientific method is. You clear do not know what a planet or a comet is. You can not distinguish between wild fantasy and scientific fact. You demand that others do research when it is clear that you do not even have the minimum knowledge required for this debate you have started.

Go to the library, go to the science section and pick up a good book on astronomy. You will be amazed when you read it, you will discover how little you really know. It is no good tryingto convince us that you are knowledgeable for your age in the subject, the evidence is clearly there before us that you are not.

It is already under discussion in the Space News section (why do people not have the patience to wait a few days until the announcement is made). NASA make such announcements on an almost weekly basis. It is probably no big deal, it is just that they notify the press so that they can have journalists at the meeting. In this case the announcement will be an object discovered in our Galaxy. That wording suggests it is not a solar system object. One thing it definitely won't be is a comet planet as there is no such thing.

At 14, I should think that you would be interested in learning, not argument...
Knowledge is a key to actually being able to argue.

Might I suggest you take Waspie's words to heart...after all, he's been studying the topic twice as long as you've been on the planet.

What grade are you in, Dr.?

9th?

Earth and Space Science used to be a course offered in the 9th and 10th grades...as I recall. That's a good primer. Introductory Physical Science is at your level. Do they have that in your school?

Look...if you think magnets are crap, and haven't learned much about space or light waves...perhaps you might want to go to the Space Q&A thread and pick some brains??

There's a bunch of pretty qualified folks here who know something about that stuff!

Well, I'm sure you haven't heard of the show. You were 2 when it came out, and 5 when it ended.
But that wasn't the point of my post.

I am pleased you like learning new things, and that you watch educational programming.

Here's something for you:

You just posted a picture which is a representation of an elliptically orbiting item around the Sun that had nothing on it but a caption "The Orbit of Planet X".

There are no references as to where it came from, or scale, or period, or anything...just a statement.
Understand that this means absolutely nothing...if you're attempting to show that "Planet X exists". It's a non-descript picture that could've been made up by anyone.

Waspie_Dwarf
Ok, so you have posted a picture. It means nothing. Anyone can draw that.

What is the source of that picture? What ACTUAL evidence is their for such a body? For an orbit to be plotted that accurately the object must have been observed. Who observed, using what instruments and when?

I can answer all of these questions for you accept the source of the picture.

Q.What actual evidence is their for planet -X.
A. None.

Q. Who observed it.
A. No one.

Q. Using what instrument.
A. See above.

Q. When.
A. See above.
---------------------------------

You see the real difference between science and superstition is that superstition relies entirely on belief. Science relies on available evidence. That doesn't mean that the superstitious appraoch is always wrong or that the current scientific belief is always right, just that science is right faf FAR more often.

Science continues to ask questions. It is self doubting, self correcting. New ideas will emerge and challenge the old. The hypothesis that best fits the observed facts will be accepted whilst those that don't are rejected. As such science continually moves forward. Science is not about claiming that something is te absolute truth, it is a constant quest for the truth.

Superstition does not do this. It says, "this is how things are, this is the absolute truth". It ignores the observed facts when they don't fit the idea. It rejects reality in favour of unfounded belief. In this way superstition never moves forward. It drags mankind into the past rather than propelling him into the future.

It is for this reason that I say again, read some good science books. Learn to tell the difference between science and superstition.
NeoGenesis

Question.Where did you get that picture from.

I advice you to be a bit more thorough in your research. The picture that you posted does not have a distance measurement scale. So to give you a hint on the distance that this picture represents in astronomical terms it would miss us by a long shot not to count for our solar systems save guard JUPITER with its massive gravitational field witch would most likely pick up the comet and hurl it back into the fastness of space.
