im having a weird problem, a customer of mine has one of those zune media thingys but cant get it to install on his gateway xp media center computer, we've pretty much tried everything, updating drivers, uninstalling & reinstalling the usb drivers on the machine, uninstalling any other sync hardware and software but nothing seems to work.
i keep getting this error message from the installation wizrd that says "the specified service does not exist as an installed service".

i install it on any other computer and it works fine, so i know its not the zune. gateway tech support doesnt want to help either becuase the warranty is expired, according to them, the machines perfect, its the zune that bad (but like i said- it works on any other computer) w00t.gif

i was wondering if anyone else here has had the same or similar problem, any advice would be appreciated thumbsup.gif

(oops, sorry, i should have posted this in the help and support section-is there anyway the forum moderator can move it for me?)

Ok, I know this is going to sound silly like did you check the plug, but did you check to see if the contact gel got smeared and if you need more?
SirRedeye
contact gel? im new to these things- thanks for the suggestion, the plug didnt appear to have any gel on it. ill make a note of it in case it does use it, and needs more

but, i have to declare SUCCESS! tongue.gif
apparently there is a windows media 11 update thats installed in vista os, but the 2005 xp media center requires that update to reconize & run the zune hardware.
geez,
what a run around.

WAIT _NO

Not on the plug.

I have seen the guys here throw some computers together and I know they did not put it on the plug.
I saw them with these little thin packets of some liquid they were smearing on a computer part and asked what they were doing.
They said that is was the liquid that puts the life into a computer, a connection gel. They said you have to put it in when putting a computer together and that when people screw with their computers they often wipe it off and then when the computer will not work they think it is ruined when they just need to run down to their computer supply store and get some more connection liquid to reapply.

It looked like they were putting a thin smear of grease over a large flat part.
When I see one of them come in I will ask and get back to this thread and give you more info.

so anyway................

No one came in and I noticed while moving around that they had a box of their crap in the room here, so I thought, "What would it hurt if I just dug around a little bit and maybe I would see this stuff in their somewhere?"

Obviously it was booby trapped because that is the only way I can explain that no sooner did I life one tiny little box inside the big one than these tiny little screws and weird little copper colored square pieces of metal go flying all over the damn place from somewhere.

After scooping it all up and strategically placing them in small piles along the bottom of one side of the box to where it would look as if knocking against the box might have caused the disturbance, which I was forced to do as there were no damn lists on any boxes to tell me where the damn things came out of, I found a sample of the stuff I was looking for!

It looks like a plastic syringe filled with an opaque silver metallic substance.
The sticker on the package says "Manhatten - Finest Quality Computer Products" and nothing else. I swear these people are part of a massive computer cult because they never have labels telling you jack sh** about what anything is!

Perhaps if you do a search on this product line and fine the plastic syringe with the secret holy metallic goo in a picture in their products line it will solve the mystery.

I will stay on it though. I have to know now.

Here's my advice..tell the person to throw away the Gateway and buy something else. I have had 2 gateway computers and both were crap!
Bella-Angelique
Aha!!!

I found it.
While it says here it is not a requirement, I know they had to go get some more of this stuff one time and it was only after that that they got one working when one tried to go without using any once.

Maybe it is secret cult magic.

hahaha- i know exactly what you mean, i try to tell people to shy away from gateway too! but i guess they're just to popular laugh.gif and cheap ect...

* Bella, it sounds like your talking about heatsync gell- it goes on the processor and other motherboard parts to help keep it from overheaqting.
wash that stuff off if you get it on you- its suppose to be pretty toxic...
