CLARKSVILLE, Indiana

A group of middle school girls videotaped the beating of a 12-year-old schoolmate and posted it on the Internet in an attack, that authorities believe was inspired by a smiliar one in Florida, police said.

No charges have been filed and police said they have not yet interviewed all the girls, ages 12-14, who are students at Clarksvills Middle School in Indiana. The girl's identities were not released because they are juveniles.

The victim, who was treated for cuts and bruises at a hospital was the daughter of a police officer, said Police Chief Dwight Ingle.

Police said the girls lured the victim to a parking lot near a warehouse in the town just north of Louisville, Kentucky, on April 12 and beat her up. The violence was videotaped and later posted on the video-sharing Web site Photobucket, Ingle said. It has since been removed.

The video begins with one girl arguing with the victim and escalates into a fight during which the 12 year-old is repeatedly hit in the head as other girls watch and laugh, police said.

Detective Darrell Rayburn said Thursday that police believe the plot was inspired by a similar scheme in which a group of teenage girls in central Florida posted the videotaping beating of a 16-year-old victim online. Parts of that video have been widely seen on TV and Youtube.

Clarksville school Superintendent Stephen G. Fisher said he did not anticipate disciplinary action against the students because the fight did not occur on school grounds.

It has been happening for some time even before the media flurry over the Florida incident. Posting beat downs on the internet began with the phenomena known as happy slapping.

You know, mabye if every news outlet didn't actually SHOW THE FOOTAGE time and time again the problem wouldn't be as big as it is, like that paris hilton burger ad that everyone was angry at but showed over and over....

This the thing people don't get. People WANT to be outraged and it encourages outrageous behavior.

It's like being in a group of people and somebody says, "Who farted?!?" You can see almost everybody in the group desparately sniffing hoping to get a whiff just so they can say, "Awwww, gross!"

People need to be informed about what's going on in the world, but sensationalizing something always encourages it...

I would not blame the media in this case. The people involved in this case had issues and would have resorted to violence either way. The media thought is not always responsible, in the cases of when they misrepresent the truth, but I do not see that at play here. One could also blame the internet for this because it is a pretty old practice since youtube has tons of these type of videos for a while now but blaming the internet will not stop people from being violent or induce them to become so.

happy slapping

hmmm. I believe happy-slapping was a British invention...

It seems to me a lot of kids are getting dummer and less disciplined these days, and thats coming from Me, a teenager.

Just disgusting..... mad.gif

Apparently, teens will do anything these days just to have something to post on YouTube.......The more violent the better.....

I believe if there wasn't a demand for this, an audience (pardon the pun) if you like, it wouldn't be so prevelant in todays society..... sad.gif

I'm not saying these kids didn't have issues to begin with, but I'm putting a certain amount of blame on the media, but more blame on bad parenting...Don't get me wrong, I'm not just talking about one parent families...I know alot of kids that come from broken homes, and they are doing just fine...But the more I read about these teenagers who are going off the wall, the more I ask what kind of home life do they have...All you need nowadays is for one kid to read or see an incident like this, think it's the way to go, and friends will follow...I'm not too familiar with Youtube, but obviously they post anything on it. Do they not have any kind of censorship as to their videos..

Hi MUM, just saw your post, after I put mine up, and I agree....Kids are subjected to crap these days, and it seems that alot of them thrive on it....Very sad and disturbing........
