Guess what?? I got some batteries! Sorry for the wait, I found my camera last night and by then it was too late to go out and buy some working batteries. Thanks, guys. Yeah, I always have tons of batteries but do any of them ever work? No!

Anyhow, I took the pictures, and I should get them up soon. The only problem is we have a new printer/scanner thing, so I'm trying to figure out how to get the pictures up. So, I'll just keep fiddling around with it and the pictures should be up soon.

If any of you have more experiance with shrinking photos from your digital camera, now would be a great time to express them.

Okay, I've started to edit them on paint, but the only thing I managed to do is cut some of the extra wall away. I'm gonna run back down to my basement and snap a couple pics from farther away. I'll be back in five minutes.

What? I finally got it perfectly but it says "Upload Failed. You are not permitted to upload this type of file." What's that mean? *Fiddles furiously again*

Anyhow, I noticed another print (I think it might be new) on the back wall. I also couldn't get the criss-crossed strange looking print. It was too far from the open door so I couldn't get much light. I tried to use the flash, but the only thing I managed to get was a white picture.

you seem to have a 3yr. old with a black or brown crayon on the loose in your basement.

To me unless the pics were posted upsidedown it looks like the marks came from something taller pulling fingers or claws up on the wall.

How high up are they, could they be remnants of dirtwasp nest?

They wern't upsidedown, nor were they that high up. As stated before, a small child could probably reach up and touch them. Probably about three feet off of the ground. Maybe a bit closer to four. Take or give a few inches.

More of a marker, from the looks of it. Although the pictures don't really show very well the kind of texture. In the pictures it sort of looks red, but they are blackish-grayish, as stated before. They also are more of a crusty material. Like dried black, dried blood.


So, should I be afraid?

The only thing you need to be afraid of is people with dirty fingers.

Are more marks appearing? You could coat your basement floor with baby powder to show any tracks and paths.

So, I have what looks like dried-wet ash finger prints on my basement wall? Nobody goes down there, I've asked everyone in the household and they havn't been down their in ages. I went down, searching for a box when I noticed them on the far wall. I went back down later in the week on and there were more of them. Nobody from my house has been in that basement.

Try to get more light,not from a flashlight,but from a lamp or something.More light=better pics=easier to solve.

Also could you take a pic showing something nearby as a size-comparison???

I'm betting they are old prints, and climate changes are causing them to become more apparent, or you simply didn't notice them before. I have identical prints on my basement wall that leads up the stairs (somebody sleeps down there), and I have never once thought them to be any more than dirty finger swipes.

The baby powder idea isn't bad, if you really feel that threatened.

The first print might have been old, but the rest wern't. After I saw the first print, I searched up and down that wall to make sure there wern't anymore. I'll go take another picture with a flashlight, and I'll hold up a penny or something for size comparison.

if you honestly think there are dried bloody hand prints in your basement, YES. you should be afraid. i bet there is a better explanation though.

I think Otterclaw's having us on. The pics didn't even resemble handprints!

The middle picture is the picture that first started all of this. If you take a closer look, you can see what looks like fingers swiped across the wall, and even the faint outline of a thumb.

Hmmm... I'm keeping my eye on you. Not literally though; ouch.

They don't really look like handprints to me at all, unless someone is taking pait and splotching it on. Doesn't seem consistant with a handswipe unless the hand was wiggled and stuff.

Except for the fact that both are in sets of four, almost looks like seepage through the walls. Weird.

Haha, I don't want to sound mean or rude because i am a really nice person, but that was sooo anticlamatic.
Just for the fact that you put great great detail into the description and i was really expecting something like a distorted hand print, than everyone asking for pics, than you meeting a lot of obstacles keeping you from posting them, than when they get posted it's just like, OK yeah, anything could have caused that, an animal, bug, little kid, anything, nothing is really connecting the marks to make them look as if it was one solid object that created it at once it looks like something that was done at different times, have you touched them? it almost looks like something splashed on the wall than collected dust and dirt, or kind of looks like someone held a match or candle close to the wall and it just collected suet.

I'm sorry if I raised everyone's expecations so high, but it really looks more like a hand print in person. The only reason I was so scared is, they keep appearing, and I'm the only one who has been going down there. I thought maybe somehow I was doing, but one wall was clear when I left, then when I came back it was there. I don't understand.

I don't really know what this would do..But try running a black light over the marks...Just to see what comes up...Could be intresting...

If you have a video camera then you should have it record all night or something and see if anything comes up.

you could do a shot of the whole wall with the marks, and then the penny/ size comparison thing. =)
