Sitting outside on a sunny day
I hear the shouts of children at play
To them all that matters is in that moment
As I sit & remember how my youth was spent
Joy & mirth resounds aplenty
As I recall old friends & what they meant to me
Most have now moved on with families of their own
We seldom speak, though we're all on the phone
I cherish those days & fond memories
The running, the shouting, the bloodied knees
A time to enjoy life without a care
A time to act without thinking to meet a dare
As we grow older our thinking changes
To marriage, children & earning our wages
A home, the bills & paying our dues
Time sits & smiles & plays the muse
Growing aged our thoughts change yet again
To our own mortality as we wonder when?
As we wander down an endless hall
Behind each door are memories waiting to recall
Our loves, our triumphs, our past mistakes
Our children, christmas & birthday cakes
Some memories & thoughts become hard to retain
As the files get deleted in an elderly brain
The young are nurtured whilst the old taken for granted
Too late to remember them once they're departed
To some we will always be their children
Our fathers, our mothers who have shared our burden
Another sits & watches from the highest tower
Known by many names he is a higher power
to him too we will always be children
Shouting & Playing in his earthly garden
Don't just judge others but also yourself
Lest you end up all alone on the shelf
Life is far more than just a death sentence
To others we can all make such a difference
Some things will always bring comfort & joy
A beaming smile from a little girl or boy
A frosty morn or a midsummer's day
Or hearing the shouts of children at play
