Quotes:

"Professor Amaya’s aim, when the genes are identified, is to develop drugs or gene therapy treatments that would activate or silence them in humans, whichever is needed. The first stage would be to encourage scarless healing; limb regeneration is much further away.

Gus McGrouther, chairman of plastic and reconstructive research at Manchester University, said the research into tissue regeneration was the next scientific step for those affected by disfigurement. “It is all a question of money and resources and research. It will eventually happen,” he said. "

Sounds very interesting. It could really help thousands of people if its aim is materialized. Think about how many people are suffering from disfigurement, from burns and scars. They are not accepted as "normal" in the society. They feel they do not have a chance in life, its as if living just for the sake of living. Yes, I know how these people feel. I too have a minor disfiguration from scars on my face, that is why I take an interest in such articles.

Further in the future, we might even have limb regeneration. Though its almost certain at least twenty years away, but think of how many disabled people are given a chance. They are finally able to walk to use their hands, and many would be able to find a job. These people got their disability from several possibilities, through accidents, or more commonly through wars. Soldiers come back from war disfigured, amputated. Its costly for the government, but the emotional costs are higher.

What are you guys take on this? When do you think scarless healing and limb regeneration be possible? From the research Ive done, I believe scarless healing might come as early as 2010, while limb regeneration might come around circa 2028.

I read somewhere once that Vaseline was used in World War 1 for wounds and burns as it had some properties in helping wounds heal with minimal scaring..stopped the protein in cells from dying off, as an oxygen barrier ..

Here's more to support the use of copper...

Fingertips, including the whole last bone and joint and fingernail, can already regenerate as long as the wound is not stitched shut. The problem becomes one of extending this process to larger and more complex structures as they are exposed to the world and hooked onto an adult body, not in the womb and hooked onto a developing embryo. I would not be surprised if a way was found to provide some degree of regenerative capability, although I doubt such things will ever be as good as a natural-born-with-it limb.

i heard a while ago that some scientists in america managed to regenerate a missing digit on a finger years after it had been severed ... if i find a link i'll post it... thumbsup.gif

i think this topic is also being studied in jelly fish, polyps and starfish, to be able to immitate the regeneration properties... they also are investigating the fountain of youth.... the polyp with non-specific cells that can go back to juvinile form and regrow itself again.... saw it on tv i'm sure others did as well.... i think thats when i first heard of the possibility of this topic.... intriguing stuff!!!!!

This is an old story, the guy who lost the end of his finger is the brother-in-law of the guy who makes the pixie dust, the story has been released a few times as if it's just happened, a doctor on radio 4 this week slated the BBC for not investigating the story properly he said "just the tip of the finger was lost and it would grow back anyway in normal circumstances"
