For people who don't know what the LHC is (Large Hadron Collider)
here is an article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Large_Hadron_Collider

Some of the most pessimistic scientists are waiting for the bang to happen and predict that the world or just a part of it will be destroyed in August... wow.

They don't even know in theory what can happen.

So on what are we supposed to base our predictions?

I am just asking what do you think, not even the scientists don't know in theory what's gonna happen.
But if it helps: They're shooting microparticles with almost-light-speed trough a 27km long circle, going faster and faster and then let it collapse against something else.

They don't know what is going to happen, that is why they built the thing. That does make it scary, I believe the arguement against the end of the world sort of thing happening is what they are trying to do happens in nature all the time. Cross your fingers and hope they are right! hehe

i understand that when they were conducting the Manhatten Project, they didn't know if the reaction would stop with the plutonium or go on with the atmosphere and the ground too.

sounds like they want another go ... wink2.gif

The LHC has been making me nervous ~ everytime I come across and article on it... don't know. But I voted for "A new kind of energy will burst free and give us infinite or nearly infinite amount of usable energy, bursting us into a new age of technology." ~ At least that is what I hope for. And would like to add to that ~ maybe even timetravel. (read there is some speculation going on in that regard).... AND of course if things go bad ~ Well, I am sure we won't feel a thing.

Lots of things will happen, but nothing of consequence to you unless you enjoy reading scientific articles.

Hmm August huh...
well I suppose as I'm selling my house (ending up with about $300,000 in my pocket) it will likely be just in time for me to get my money and "Boom!"...

Knowing my luck (and Murphy's law) I'll never be able to spend a dime.

So do I go ahead and tempt fate and sell the house?

I expect Higgs particles, quantum level black holes (that disappear after a tiny fraction of a second), perhaps detection of a calabi-yau shape, maybe strange particles or exotic matter.
